Edinboro Runs Off Final 11 Points to Pull Away from Clarion, 63-47

EDINBORO, Pa. – After back-to-back games against nationally-ranked teams, the Edinboro women's basketball team found itself facing an upset-minded Clarion squad on Friday night. The Fighting Scots would score the final 11 points to pull away for a 63-47 win, with Michaela Barnes dropping in 30 points. The victory is the fourth in the last five games for Edinboro, as they improved to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC West. Clarion has now five games in a row and is 3-14 and 1-10, respectively. Edinboro has now won the last five meetings with Clarion and 13 of the last 14.

With potentially dangerous weather conditions forecast for Saturday, the contest was moved up 24 hours and both teams were playing for the second time in three days. The Golden Eagles hardly played like a team with a subpar record.

Edinboro led 31-24 at the half, and built the lead to as much as 16 points at 45-29 with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter. The Fighting Scots would enter the fourth quarter with a 47-35 lead.

Clarion refused to go away, however, and would cut the margin to 52-47 on the strength of 9-3 run. That's when head coach Callie Wheeler called a timeout with 5:02 remaining. When the Fighting Scots took the court again, they would score the final 11 points of the game, holding Clarion scoreless the rest of the way.

Madison Amalia drained a baseline 3-pointer out of the timeout, and following a Clarion miss, Barnes scored on a layup to boost the advantage to 57-47. That would start a string of six straight points by Barnes, who made four straight free throws. Bella Burrelli capped the victory with a layup.

Barnes registered her fifth 30-point effort of the season and the eighth of her career, as the senior guard scored 30 points. She made 9-of-20 field goals, including 2-of-5 3-pointers, and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the line. She added four assists.

Cheniya Sharpe was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures as she recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, seven on the offensive end. She came in as the third-leading rebounder in the PSAC. She added three blocked shots.

Bridgette Shaffer was unable to find the hot hand as she did on Wednesday against IUP, finishing with a career-high 25 points and seven 3-pointers. She would extend her streak of making at least one 3-pointer in every game this year, but that was her only bucket. But the redshirt senior still played a huge role in the win, pulling down 11 rebounds, blocking four shots, and recording three steals.

Edinboro would end the night shooting 34.4 percent from the floor, making 5-of-22 3-pointers, and going 14-of-16 at the line. Clarion, meanwhile, was 20-of-63 from the floor (31.7 pct.), making 2-of-12 3-pointers, and went 5-of-8 at the line.  Ke'Airah Massiah was the lone double figure scorer for Clarion, finishing with 13 points. Yasmin Lewis had 12 rebounds.
Behind the efforts of Sharpe and Shaffer, the Fighting Scots dominated the glass, 49-37. While Edinboro committed one more turnover than Clarion, 17-16, but the Fighting Scots held a 20-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Now with an extra day to rest, Edinboro will wrap up a three-game homestand with a key PSAC West contest against Seton Hill on Wednesday, January 22.
