MATCH STORYLINES

MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro returns to the mat for the first time since winning two of three matches in the Mountaineer Quad at West Virginia on December 22. The Fighting Scots begin the 2020 portion of their schedule with duals against the University at Buffalo and Gannon. The wrestling gets underway at 12 noon at McComb Fieldhouse with the Fighting Scots squaring off against Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference dual. It will mark the first time the two have faced each other since 2013-14. That match will be followed by Buffalo wrestling Gannon, and the day will wrap up with Edinboro meeting Gannon for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
  • Earlier this year, the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • Edinboro comes into the day with a 7-3 overall record and is 2-1 in MAC competition. The Fighting Scots won their first-ever MAC dual, 29-6 over Kent State, and followed that with a 25-7 win over Ohio. They would drop a 21-19 decision to George Mason on December 20. Buffalo is 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the MAC, but the Bulls have some very interesting results. Three of their losses have to nationally-ranked teams – Wisconsin, Purdue and Missouri. Edinboro and Buffalo have faced several common opponents. Both lost to Wisconsin – Edinboro by a 28-15 score and UB 33-3. Edinboro recently lost to West Virginia, 22-9, while the Bulls posted a 24-12 win over the Mountaineers. The Fighting Scots' rally fell just short against George Mason as they lost 21-91, while UB defeated the Patriots two days later, 26-10. And both teams handily defeated Long Island. Gannon has a 2-0 record, with wins over Long Island and Millersville.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Edinboro is currently ranked ninth in the MAC Coaches December Rankings. Buffalo comes in sixth. Three Fighting Scots are ranked in the individual weight class rankings, led by Jacob Oliver. The redshirt sophomore is ranked second at 174 lbs. and comes in with a 13-4 record.  Jon Spaulding (13-5) is third at heavyweight, while freshman Tye Varndell (12-5) is fifth at 133 lbs.  Buffalo also has three wrestlers in the MAC rankings, with two ranked number one in their respective weight classes. Derek Spann, who is ranked 15th at 133 lbs. by InterMat, ranked number one in the MAC with an 11-3 record. Troy Keller is ranked number one at 165 lbs. with a 9-3 record. Sam Schuyler (7-5) is ranked sixth at 197 lbs. Both Spann and Keller were NCAA qualifiers a year ago. Keller, a senior, won the MAC championship at 165 lbs. after transferring from Niagara County CC. Spann, a redshirt junior, finished second at 133 lbs. at the MAC Championships to earn his trip to Nationals.
  • Jacob Oliver was named the MAC Eastern Division Wrestler of the Week after winning the championship at 174 lbs. at the Navy Classic. The redshirt sophomore was Edinboro's lone wrestler to qualify for Nationals a year ago, finishing at 28-7. He is off to a 10-3 start.
  • Current Edinboro assistant coach Sean Boyle served as an assistant at Buffalo the last year before joining the Edinboro staff in September.
