Edinboro Drops 2020, PSAC West Opener at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team turned in a strong first half at Gannon's Hammermill Center on Friday night, but the Fighting Scots were unable to maintain the momentum in the second half in a 79-59 loss. The game marked the first for the Fighting Scots in 2020, and was the PSAC West opener too, as they are now 5-5 overall and 2-4 in PSAC action. The Golden Knights are also 5-5 but have a 4-2 record in league play.

With Anthony Coleman bombing away, Edinboro jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Coleman hit a pair of three's, Trey Staunch muscled inside for a pair of baskets, and Jaryn Simpson closed out the quick getaway with a layup.

Edinboro would maintain the lead until midway through the half when the Golden Knights took the lead at 15-14 on a tip-in by Deante Cisero. Edinboro would continue to hang with Gannon, however, as Coleman scored 13 of the first 21 points. Gannon would pull away late to take a 40-32 lead at the half. After making five of their first eight shots, Edinboro would close the first half at 32.4 percent (11-of-34).

Gannon would open the second half with the first two baskets to build the lead to double digits at 44-32, and Edinboro would get the lead under double digits just twice the rest of the way. The last came at 46-37 on a Coleman layup.  The deficit was still just 54-43 with 11:18 remaining, but Frank Webb Jr. buried back-to-back 3-pointers as Gannon would pull away from there.

Coleman led Edinboro with 22 points, 17 of those in the first half. It was his fifth 20-point game of the season. The redshirt senior guard added six rebounds. Staunch made 6-of-9 field goals and was 7-of-8 from the line for 19 points. He added a team-high seven rebounds. Daylon Harris was also in double figures with 11 points on the strength on three 3-pointers. Alex Jay pulled down five rebounds and limited Gannon sharpshooter Chris Clancy to just one 3-pointer.

Cicero led Gannon with a career-high 27 points, adding 11 rebounds. The Golden Knights had five players in double figures. Victor Olawoye had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Johnson also had 11 points and six assists. Michael Tertsea and Webb had 10 points apiece, with Teatsea contributing eight boards.

Edinboro would finish the night shooting a season-low 31.7 percent from the floor (19-of-60). The Fighting Scots made 7-of-25 3-pointers and went 14-of-16 at the line. Gannon shot 47.8 percent from the floor (32-of-67), making 6-of-18 3-pointers, and was 9-of-11 at the line.

The two teams were even on the boards at the half, but Gannon would end the night with a 43-34 advantage. Edinboro committed 11 turnovers and Gannon seven. The Golden Knights held a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint and 20-8 in second chance points.

The Gannon game signaled the start of a hectic stretch for the Fighting Scots, as they play four games in a span of nine days. Edinboro hosts West Chester on Monday, January 6. It will mark the first home game since December 1.
