Simpson Scores Season-High 27 Points but Scots Can't Slow Down 10th-Ranked West Chester

EDINBORO, Pa. – Playing for the first time at home since December 1, the Edinboro men's basketball team had the unfortunate task of facing one of the top teams in the country on Monday night. West Chester came in ranked tenth in the latest NABC Division II Top 25, and the Golden Rams would hand Edinboro a 91-72 defeat.

The loss leaves Edinboro at 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC. West Chester, meanwhile improved to 13-0, setting the record for the best start in school history. WCU is 7-0 in PSAC play.

The Golden Rams got off to an incredibly hot start. They scored the game's first 13 points in just over three minutes, coming out firing with three 3-pointers. To their credit, the Fighting Scots didn't flinch. After head coach Pat Cleary called a timeout, Edinboro answered with the next eight points.

Unfortunately, WCU came back with seven in a row to rebuild the lead to 20-8. Edinboro's deficit would grow to as much as 26 points in the first half at 49-23 as the Golden Rams continued to knock down three's.  At one point, West Chester had made 10 3-pointers with just under seven minutes still remaining in the half as the Rams made 10 of their first 15 attempts.

The Fighting Scots would battle back to within 13 points at the half at 53-40 thanks to a 17-4 run, including the final seven points. Trey Staunch had six points and Jaryn Simpson five in the run.

The fast getaway saw WCU shoot 55.3 percent (21-of-38) in the first half, including 10-of-19 on 3-pointers, and hold a 25-16 edge on the glass.

Edinboro was unable to get any closer in the second half, as WCU started the half on a 12-3 run to build the lead back up to 65-43 with 16:48 left to play. The Fighting Scots did have one last run in them, cutting an 84-60 lead to 84-68 with just over five minutes to play on a pair of Staunch free throws.  West Chester answered with a pair of layups to halt the threat.

Edinboro ended the night shooting 39.4 percent from the floor (26-of-66), and could convert on just seven of 32 3-point attempts. The Fighting Scots were 13-of-18 at the line.

West Chester, the top scoring team in the PSAC coming into the game at 88.2 ppg., cooled off considerably in the second half but still shot 45.6 percent for the game (36-of-79). That included a 15-of-33 showing from beyond the 3-point arc. The 15 3-pointers are the most by an Edinboro opponent this year.  The Golden Rams were 4-of-9 at the line.

WCU held a 49-37 rebounding edge, including 20 offensive boards. Both teams committed 11 turnovers.

The trip of Simpson, Staunch, and Daylon Harris combined for 54 points. Simpson scored a season-high 27 points, as the junior guard made 9-of-15 field goals, including 4-of-10 3-pointers, and was 5-of-6 at the line. He added seven assists while committing just one turnover.

Staunch had his hands full all night against a trio of imposing post players. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student totaled 16 points (7-of-9 field goals, 2-of-2 free throws), and pulled down eight rebounds. Harris added 11 points, all in the first half.

Leading scorer Anthony Coleman, who came in averaging 20.1 ppg., was held to nine points, but he would contribute six rebounds.

West Chester also had three players in double digits. Malik Jackson made 6-of-13 3-pointers to end the night with 27 points. Robbie Heath, who came in as the leading scorer in the PSAC at 25.0 ppg., was limited to 17 points, but had eight rebounds and eight assists. Josh Samec had 16 points and seven rebounds, with the 6'7" sophomore making 4-of-7 three's

In the midst of a stretch of four games in nine days, Edinboro is right back in action in less than two days, hosting Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, January 8 at 7:30 p.m.
