Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bob Shreve, Sports Information Director

Long-Bombing Boro Falls Just Short of Rallying for Win over UPJ

EDINBORO, Pa. – With Trey Staunch muscling inside and Anthony Coleman and Jaryn Simpson bombing away from the outside, the Edinboro men's basketball team nearly made up all of a 17-point deficit against a hot Pitt-Johnstown team.  The Fighting Scots would come up just short, falling 86-83 on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse.

Facing a difficult stretch against some of the top teams in the PSAC, Edinboro would suffer its third straight loss and seventh in the last eight games to fall to 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the PSAC West. Pitt-Johnstown, with long-time head coach Bob Rukavina picking up his 498th career win, has now won five straight games to improve to 13-2 and 7-1 in league play.

The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing by 17 points at 32-15 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half. They would run off the next seven points on a pair of Staunch layups and a three-point play by Steven Freeman, to pull to within 32-24. UPJ would hold a 39-30 lead at the half, with Edinboro shooting 33.3 percent from the floor 13-of-39 and making one of 10 3-pointers.

UPJ would rebuild the lead to 14 points at 75-61 with 4:40 to play. The Fighting Scots would suddenly catch fire with Coleman and Simpson each hitting a pair of 3-pointers, all from well beyond the 3-point arc. Edinboro would go on am 8-0 run to pull to within 79-75 with 1:27 to play when Coleman made a pair of free throws.

Edinboro was forced to foul, and the Mountain Cats would make seven of eight free throws in the final 40 seconds. Two more Coleman free throws cut the deficit to 83-80 with 25 seconds to play, but Joe Batt hit a pair of free throws five seconds later to make it 85-80.

Coleman came down and fired up a three, and the Fighting Scots would have three more tips on offensive rebounds, but none would fall. Drew Magestro finally grabbed the rebound for UPJ and would hit one of two free throws with five seconds remaining. Simpson would hit his fourth 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final score.

After a slow start, Coleman scored 10 points in the last three-and-a-half minutes to finish the night with 23 points. It was his sixth game of 20-or-more points this season. The redshirt senior guard made 3-of-10 3-pointers and was 8-of-9 at the line.

Staunch and Simpson posted double-doubles, the first of the season for Staunch and the second for Simpson. Staunch totaled 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student made 8-of-16 field goals and was 4-of-4 at the line. He had seven offensive boards.

Simpson, meanwhile, stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals. He made 4-of-11 3-pointers. Steven Freeman and Daylon Harris finished with eight points apiece.

The Mountain Cats also had three players score in double figures. Josh Wise totaled 23 points while Magestro burned the Scots for 21 points. The duo combined to make 7-of-11 3-pointers. John Paul Kromka had 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and blocked three shots. Fred Mulbah finished the night with 11 assists.

Edinboro shot 36.6 percent from the floor (30-of-82), including 8-of-26 on 3-pointers, and was 15-of-16 at the line. UPJ came in leading the PSAC in field goal percentage at 51.5 percent, and would be held to 47.6 percent (30-of-63). The Mountain Cats made 9-of-20 3-pointers and went 17-of-23 at the line.

The Fighting Scots would dominate the glass in the second half and ended the night with a 50-38 advantage. The work on the boards led to a 22-4 edge in second chance points. Edinboro committed 12 turnovers and UPJ 13.
