Shaffer Makes Six 3-Pointers in Loss at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team began the 2020 portion of its schedule on Friday night with a deceiving 72-53 loss at Gannon. The contest also represented the first PSAC West game for both teams. Edinboro is now 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC, while Gannon improved to 9-3 and 5-1, respectively.

The Fighting Scots were hampered by a cold-shooting first half as they made just 3 of their first 19 shots.  Gannon would hold a 19-7 lead after one quarter as Edinboro went 2-of-12 from the floor compared to 8-of-16 for the Lady Knights.

The deficit would grow to as much as 19 points at 31-12 midway through the second quarter, and found the Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 40-25 at intermission as Bridgette Shaffer hit a late 3-pointer. In fact, Shaffer made all four of her 3-point attempts in the second quarter to score 12 points in the half.  Edinboro was 7-of-26 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, with Shaffer going 4-of-7, all on 3-pointers.

The Fighting Scots found their shooting touch in the third quarter, and quickly cut into Gannon's lead. A traditional 3-point play by Michaela Barnes cut the deficit to 44-37 less than four minutes into the period. While they would pull no closer than seven points in the period, they made 7-of-16 shots in the period. Just as important, they held Gannon to 5-of-18 from the floor. Gannon would lead 51-42 after three quarters.

Edinboro would eventually pull to within five points on two occasions, the last 58-53 with 5:16 remaining in the contest on a layup by Barnes. Unfortunately, Edinboro would not score again, as the Fighting Scots missed their final seven shots and committed four turnovers. Gannon would end the contest on a 14-0 run to pull away late.

Edinboro would end the game at 30.0 percent from the floor (18-of-60), making 9-of-30 3-pointers and 8-of-13 free throws. Gannon finished at 42.9 percent from the floor (27-of-63) and made just 5-of-24 3-pointers, but made 13-of-17 free throws.
Gannon held a 43-36 edge on the glass, with Edinboro committing 14 turnovers and Gannon 11. The Lady Knights enjoyed a 40-14 advantage in points in the paint.

Barnes and Shaffer led Edinboro with 18 points apiece. Barnes became just the seventh player at Edinboro to reach 1,500 career points, sitting at exactly 1,500. Shaffer made a career-high six 3-pointers in 12 attempts, and has now made at least three 3-pointers in all ten games. She added a team-high eight rebounds.

Alexis Rodenbaugh came off the bench to finish with season-highs of nine points and six rebounds in 21 minutes. She made 4-of-5 shots. Freshman guard Rana Elhusseini hustled her way to seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Gannon had four players in double digits, led by Tori Obenrader with 17 points. Haley Tewes added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, with Boston McKinney and Sam Piroski contributing 10 points apiece.

The Gannon game signaled the start of a hectic stretch for the Fighting Scots, as they play four games in a span of nine days. Edinboro hosts West Chester on Monday, January 6. It will mark the first home game since December 3.
