Edinboro Returns Home for First Time in Over a Month with 69-66 Win over West Chester

EDINBORO, Pa.Madison Amalia scored a career-high 19 points on Monday night at Edinboro held off West Chester, 69-66, in a PSAC crossover contest at McComb Fieldhouse. Playing at home for the first time in over a month, the victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the PSAC. West Chester, a team which has now lost five straight games by a total of 16 points, fell to 3-9 and 1-6, respectively.

Neither team was able to take over the tight contest, with 13 lead changes and seven ties. Edinboro held the largest lead of the night at 39-32 early in the third quarter. Oddly enough, not long after that the Golden Rams grabbed their largest lead. They used a run of 11 straight points to go up 43-39 with 5:31 left in the third quarter.

Edinboro entered the third quarter with a narrow 53-50 lead, but West Chester would reclaim the lead twice in the fourth quarter. The last came at 61-60 with 4:29 remaining. Amalia drained a jumper to give the Fighting Scots the lead for good at 3:55. Cheniya Sharpe made one of two free throws, and Michaela Barnes followed with a jumper in the paint as the shot clock wound down for a 65-61 lead with 2:51 to play.

Over a minute went by before the next score, a pair of free throws by Sasha Marvel to pull WCU to within 65-63. Neither team would score again until 11 seconds remained. Barnes made a pair of free throws to make it 67-63, but Leah Johnson's fourth 3-pointer of the night made it 67-66 with two ticks on the clock. West Chester was forced to foul, and Rana Elhusseini made two free throws with 0.5 seconds left to clinch the win.

Barnes led all scorers with 23 points, her fifth game of 20-or-more points this season. The senior guard made 9-of-20 field goals and was 5-of-5 from the line to boost her career point total to 1,523 points. She added eight rebounds.

Amalia amassed her 19 points thanks to a strong effort from beyond the 3-point arc. She made 7-of-12 shots overall, including 5-of-10 three's. Bridgette Shaffer added three 3-pointers in eight tries to finish with 15 points, adding a team-high nine rebounds. Shaffer has now made at least three 3-pointers in all 11 games this season.

Edinboro shot 37.5 percent for the game (24-of-64), including 9-of-28 on 3-pointers, and was 12-of-15 at the line. West Chester shot 46.4 percent from the floor, going 8-of-20 on three's, and was 6-of-7 at the line.

Edinboro held a 39-33 advantage in rebounds, with Cheniya Sharpe coming off the bench to pull down seven boards. Edinboro committed 15 turnovers and forced 18 WCU miscues.
West Chester also had three players in double digits, led by Johnson with 18 points. Justyn Roberts contributed 17 points in a reserve role, while Marvel had 14. Tacari Talford led all rebounders with 10.

Edinboro jumps right back into action in less than 48 hours, hosting  Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, January 8 at 5:30 p.m.
