Plutat Named PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Edinboro University's Nils Plutat has been named the PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 9. The PSAC actually included the fall results, as well, while choosing the first Athlete of the Week this year.

A native of Sauerlach, Bavaria, Plutat is off to a fast start. Edinboro opened its dual season just over a week ago and had two duals this past weekend. The Fighting Scots are off to a 2-1 start, defeating Walsh, 4-3, before falling to Hillsdale this past Saturday by a 6-1 score, and defeating Ashland on Sunday by the identical 6-1 score. Plutat has won all three of his singles matches in those duals, along with two of three doubles matches.

The sophomore enjoyed an impressive fall campaign, winning the PSAC singles championship and teaming with Tommy Hsu to capture the doubles crown, as well. In singles, he defeated number two seed Unai Gonzalez of Mercyhurst in the semifinals in a rematch of the ITA Atlantic Regional semifinals a week earlier, in which Gonzalez prevailed.

This time Plutat emerged as the winner by a 7-5, 6-1 score. He met Mercyhurst's Ruairdh Fraser in the finals. The Laker had match point after winning the first set 6-2 and leading 5-2 in the second. Plutat rallied to win the second set 7-5, then claimed the third set 10-5.

Plutat and Hsu were the number two seed in doubles. They won a tight 9-8 (2) decision over the Mercyhurst duo of Ruairdh Fraser/Arseniy Skyarov in the semifinals, then would coast to an 8-1 win over Nagid Walle/Robin Luetzig of Bloomsburg in the finals.

Plutat is off to an 11-2 start in singles action, playing number one singles, and is 5-3 in doubles action. He was named the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year.
