Allen, Staunch Dominate the Glass but Boro Falls at Clarion, 79-70

CLARION, Pa. – What started as a promising night for the Edinboro men's basketball team ended in a frustrating loss, as Clarion scored the final eight points, six from the charity stripe, to hand Edinboro a 79-70 defeat at Tippin Gym. The Fighting Scots are now 5-16 overall and 2-14 in the PSAC West. Clarion swept the season series with the Scots and is now 5-19 and 3-14, respectively.

The game began with Kameron King hitting a 3-pointer. The Fighting Scots would build a seven-point lead at 20-13 midway through the half thanks to a 9-2 run. Anthony Coleman would account for four of the points.

Edinboro's lead was still 27-22 before Clarion pulled even at 29 on a 3-pointer by Aaron Hilzendeger with just under four minutes to play. Neither team would lead by more than two points the rest of the half, with Clarion taking a 38-36 lead at intermission on a layup by Stevan Rodriguez at the buzzer.

The Fighting Scots were just a basket down despite shooting just 36.1 percent from the floor (13-of-36), while Clarion was at 51.6 percent (16-of-31). Edinboro held a 26-15 rebounding edge.

Edinboro scored the first seven points of the second half on a layup by Coleman, a Jaryn Simpson 3-pointer, and Anthony Allen's tip-in. That gave the Fighting Scots a 43-38 lead, but Clarion answered with a 13-2 run that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Hilzendeger accounted for the final 11 points by himself.

Trailing by as much as 55-48 with 10:39 remaining, the Fighting Scots would pull within one point on two occasions. The last came at 71-70 as Alex Jay hit a 15-foot jumper and Trey Staunch scored on an acrobatic short jumper with 1:23 remaining.

Elijhah Cottrill would score with just over a minute remaining to make it 73-70, and Edinboro would follow with a turnover. Rodriguez then started the free throw run for the Golden Eagles with a pair with 43 seconds left. After an Edinboro miss, he added three more free throws as he was fouled and the Fighting Scots were also whistled for a technical with 21 seconds left.

Edinboro would shoot 35.2 percent for the game (25-of-71), making 5-of-26 3-pointers, and went 15-of-20 at the line. Clarion finished at 46.8 percent from the field (29-of-62), but made 7-of-15 3-pointers, and went 14-of-19 at the line.

The Fighting Scots excelled on the glass behind Allen and Staunch. Allen, a 6'8" senior, pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds, and Staunch added 12 as Edinboro claimed the battle of the glass, 47-35. That included an 18-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Allen added a pair of blocked shots.

Edinboro would finish with 11 turnovers and Clarion 9, but the Golden Eagles held a 13-1 edge in points off turnovers.

Staunch and Coleman would lead Edinboro with 20 points apiece. For Staunch, the 20-point, 12-rebound effort was his fourth double-double of the season. He went 9-of-16 from the field and was just 2-of-2 from the line despite a very physical inside game. Coleman's 20 points were the most since he returned after missing five games with an injury. Simpson was third Fighting Scot in double figures, totaling 11 points. The junior guard scored a career-high 38 points in the first meeting with Clarion.

The trio of Rodriguez, Cottrill and Hilzendeger accounted for 59 of Clarion's 79 points. Rodriguez led the way with 23 points, going 9-of-12 at the line, along with 11 rebounds. Hilzendeger and Cottrill had 18 points apiece, with Cottrill scoring 16 points in the first half.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, February 15, hosting Cal U. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is 3:00 p.m.
