Five Fighting Scots in Double Figures in Loss to Cal

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team had five players score in double figures on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Cal posted a 93-67 win over the Fighting Scots. Edinboro is now 5-17 overall and 2-16 in the PSAC West. Cal improved to 16-8 and 12-6, respectively.

Three players finished with 12 points for Edinboro, with Trey Staunch registering his second straight double-double and fifth of the season. The forward pulled down 10 rebounds, five on the offensive end, to go with his 12 points. He made 4-of-7 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws and has now scored in double figures in 14 straight games.

The backcourt tandem of Anthony Coleman and Jaryn Simpson also contributed 12 points, with Simpson totaling six rebounds and four assists, and Coleman pulling down five rebounds and handing out three assists.

Steven Freeman and Alex Jay also reached double figures off the bench. Freeman, a senior guard, totaled a season-high 11 points, making 3-of-8 3-pointers. Jay reached double figures for the fourth time while making 4-of-8 field goals.  Anthony Allen contributed eight rebounds.

Cal had four players in double figures, led by Brent Pegram's 30 points. The PSAC's third-leading scorer had 19 points at the half. He added eight rebounds, eight assists, and six steals.
Tim Smith, Jr. added 16 points and six rebounds, while Zyan Collins scored 15 points before exiting with just under 14 minutes left in the game following a scary fall. Babatunde Ajike came off the bench to total 10 points and nine rebounds, while Luke House led all rebounders with 12.

Edinboro once again suffered through a frustrating cold shooting day. The Fighting Scots went 26-of-72 from the floor (36.1 percent), making 7-of-32 3-pointers, and went 8-of-13 at the line. Cal shot 40.7 percent from the floor (35-of-86) and went 10-of-11 at the line. Cal held a 57-43 advantage on the glass. Edinboro had 15 turnovers and Cal 11.

The Vulcans made 18 3-pointers in the first meeting this year, and on Saturday went 13-of-34. They came into the game ranked second in the PSAC in 3-pointers per game at over 10 per game.

The 3-pointer played a key role as Cal jumped out to a 50-30 halftime lead. Seven of their first 11 baskets were from beyond the arc as they went 11-of-23 in the first half.

Edinboro would open the second half with the first six points on a dunk by Allen, a Freeman jumper, and Staunch's layup.  The Vulcans responded with an 11-4 run to boost the lead back up to 21 points. Edinboro would get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
While trying to snap a lengthy losing streak, Edinboro will have to do so against a top ten team on Wednesday, February 19, playing at Indiana(Pa.).
