Staunch Puts Up Career-High 30 Points in Loss at Eighth-Ranked IUP

INDIANA, Pa. Trey Staunch enjoyed a career-best night on Wednesday, but the Edinboro men's basketball would drop an 86-67 decision at eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.). The Fighting Scots are now 5-18 overall and 2-17 in the PSAC West. IUP, voted the top team in the NCAA Atlantic Region earlier in the day, improved to 22-2 and 17-2, respectively.

Staunch would drop in 30 points, making 13-of-18 field goals and going 4-of-6 at the line. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student added 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double and sixth this season. He has now scored in double figures in 15 straight games.

Daylon Harris was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures, coming off the bench to contribute 15 points. Jaryn Simpson added 9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.

With Staunch leading the way, Edinboro would enjoy its best shooting night in weeks, shooting 45.0 percent (27-of-60). That in fact was the highest figure in 14 games. The Scots made 6-of-20 3-pointers and went 7-of-12 at the line. IUP shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61), made 11-of-29 three's, and was 13-of-21 from the line. IUP held a slight 35-32 edge on the glass, while Edinboro was guilty of 20 turnovers and the Crimson Hawks 15.

Staunch wasn't the only player putting up big numbers on Wednesday night. IUP senior standout Malik Miller had a triple-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Shawndale Jones came off the bench to score 18 points, Armoni Foster added 16, and Ethan Porterfield had 11.

IUP used a 15-0 run midway through the first half to take control of the contest. Edinboro trailed just 15-13 following a Staunch layup, but the Fighting Scots would go scoreless over the next  five minutes as IUP pulled ahead 33-15. The Crimson Hawks would lead 46-26 at the half.

After IUP built the lead to 57-34 early in the second half, Edinboro ran off eight straight points to pull to within 57-42. IUP answered with nine consecutive points and Edinboro never got closer than 18 points the rest of the way. The Fighting Scots did outscore IUP, 41-40, in the second half.

The Fighting Scots play the first of back-to-back home games on Saturday, February 22, hosting local rival Mercyhurst. The contest tips off at 3 p.m., and is the annual Make-A-Wish Game, including a very special reveal at halftime.
