Flu-Ridden Fighting Scots Fall to Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa. – Over the past few days the Edinboro men's basketball team has been unable to overcome the flu, and on Saturday they were also unable to overcome a Mercyhurst team that has now won seven straight games. Edinboro would drop an 89-69 decision to the Lakers, falling to 5-19 on the season and 2-18 in PSAC West action, Mercyhurst improved to 17-7 and 15-5 respectively.

The Fighting Scots were minus two players on Saturday because of the flu, with a couple others at less than 100 percent while battling its effects. Combine that with a Mercyhurst team that shot 50.0 percent for the game (33-of-66) and made 15-of-33 3-pointers, and the Scots struggled to keep up with the Lakers.

Edinboro found itself trailing 45-25 at the half as the Lakers made eight 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots would battle the Lakers to a 44-44 draw over the final 20 minutes as they enjoyed one of their better shooting halves of the season at 52.9 pct. (18-of-34). Edinboro would finish the game shooting 46.6 percent (27-of-58), making 7-of-18 3-pointers. Both teams made 8 free throws, Edinboro on 10 attempts and Mercyhurst 12.

Edinboro would outrebound the Lakers, 35-33, but Mercyhurst committed just 4 turnovers while Edinboro had 12.

The Fighting Scots featured three players in double figures, led by Anthony Coleman. The senior guard came off the bench to finish with a game-high 16 points. He made 7-of-12 field goals, including 2-of-4 free throws, adding 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Trey Staunch, though playing at less than 100 percent, made 5-of-11 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws to finish with 12 rebounds. He added a game-high 7 rebounds and had 4 assists. Jaryn Simpson finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Alec Ferrari came off the bench to contribute 8 points after scoring 5 points in 12 previous games. He made 3-of-5 field goals, including 2-of-3 3-pointers. Daylon Harris had 9 points and Turner Kurt made a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 8 points.

A balanced Mercyhurst team had four players in double digits. Zach McIntire led the way with 19 points, with MiyKah McIntosh adding 17 points and 6 assists. Cameron Gross had 16 points and 6 rebounds, and Nicholas Lang finished with 14 points.
