Barnes, Shaffer Lead Edinboro to 82-59 Win at Clarion

CLARION, Pa.Michaela Barnes and Bridgette Shaffer combined for 52 points to lead Edinboro to an 82-59 win at Clarion on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots improved to 13-8 overall and 11-6 in the PSAC West while continuing its recent dominance of Clarion. They have now won the last six meetings and 14 of the last 15. Clarion dropped to 4-20 and 2-16 in league play.

The win sets up a showdown on Saturday for third place in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots host Cal U at 1 p.m. Both teams come in tied for third with 11-6 records. The Vulcans snapped IUP's 19-game winning streak this evening, 57-52.

Barnes got Edinboro off to a fast start, scoring 20 of her 28 points in the first half. Shaffer took over in the second half, scoring 14 points.

Barnes scored 10 points in the first quarter, moving past Montique Wade into third place in career scoring with 1:13 left in the quarter on a pair of free throws. She now has 1,797 career points. She has had 13 games of 20-or-more points and came into the game ranked second in the PSAC and third in Division II in scoring at 24.4 ppg.  She made 12-of-21 field goals and went 4-of-6 at the line, adding six rebounds and five assists.

Shaffer's 24 points were one shy of her career high. She enjoyed a near-perfect shooting night, going 8-of-9 from the floor, including 6-of-9 on 3-pointers, and 2-of-2 from the line. The six 3-pointers were one shy of her career high. She added 8 rebounds.
 
Edinboro would take control of the game late in the first quarter, running off six straight points after Clarion had taken an 11-10 lead. Barnes accounted for all six points with a pair of layups and the free throws that moved her into third place in career scoring.
 
The first quarter would end with Edinboro holding an 18-13 lead. The Fighting Scots opened the second quarter with a 12-1 run that pushed the lead into double figures. It would go below double digits just once the rest of the game.
 
Barnes and Shaffer started the period with layups, and Barnes followed with a jumper to make it 24-13. Emily Hegedus made one-of-two free throws to end the run, but Shaffer and Rana Elhusseini followed with 3-pointers for a 30-14 advantage with 6:37 left in the quarter.
 
The first half would end with Edinboro on top, 44-31. Barnes would make 8-of-14 field goals and go 4-of-6 at the for 20 points in the first 20 minutes.
 
Clarion would close the gap to 46-38 early in the third quarter, but Edinboro responded with the next seven points to build a 15-point advantage at 53-38. Shaffer started it with a three, Barnes hit a jumper in the paint, and Madison Amalia finished the run with a layup. Edinboro would lead 61-45 after three quarters. That was nearly identical to the final score of 63-47 in the first meeting of the year.
 
Edinboro shot 50.0 percent for the game (30-of-60), making 7-of-14 3-pointers, and was 15-of-21 at the line. The Fighting Scots would limit Clarion to 33.3 percent from the floor (22-of-66), including 4-of-21 on 3-pointers. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-24 at the line.

With 5'3" Elhusseini sneaking inside for a career-high 10 rebounds, Edinboro held a 45-38 advantage on the glass. Cheniya Sharpe added 8 rebounds, all in the first half. Edinboro committed 14 turnovers and Clarion12.

Elhusseini would finish with 9 points and 4 assists. The Fighting Scots received strong play from the bench Bella Burrelli totaled 7 points and 4 rebounds, Amalia had 6 points, and Abbey Antolic pulled down 4 rebounds.

Clarion had three players in double figures, led by Hegedus with 13 points. Yasmin Lewis had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Celeste Ryman also had 10 points.
