Fighting Scots Clinch 11th Straight PSAC Tournament Berth with 77-53 Win over Cal

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team led virtually from start to finish in their showdown with Cal for third place in the PSAC West on Saturday, coming away with a 77-53 victory. The Fighting Scots clinched an 11th straight PSAC Tournament berth in the process while boosting their record to 14-8 overall and 12-6 in the PSAC West and winning for the seventh time in the last eight games. Cal dropped to 17-7 overall and 11-7 in league play while seeing a four-game winning streak come to an end.

The Fighting Scots continued their recent dominance over Cal. They have won the last six meetings vs. the Vulcans and have now won the last six meetings at McComb Fieldhouse.
Cal was coming off an upset of fourth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday, but the Vulcans found themselves trailing quickly on Saturday. They would score the first basket of the game on a jumper by Shauna Harrison, but when Rana Elhusseini drained a 3-pointer a minute later, Edinboro had the lead for good.

That basket started a 14-0 run for Edinboro as they quickly built a double-digit lead. The spurt featured a jumper in the paint by Michaela Barnes, followed by another Elhusseini three. Cheniya Sharpe's conventional 3-point play made it 11-2, and Bridgette Shaffer hit the first of her four 3-pointers to make it 14-2 with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Cal would close the gap to 14-5 with just under two minutes to play. It would be the last time the deficit was in single digits. Edinboro scored the final five points of the period take a decisive 19-5 lead after ten minutes.

In the first quarter, Edinboro limited Cal to 2-of-12 shooting and forced seven turnovers. The Fighting Scots went 7-of-14 from the field and went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Cal was unable to cut into Edinboro's lead in the second quarter as Edinboro outscored the Vulcans, 22-15, for a 41-20 lead at the half. Edinboro's lead grew to as many as 24 points at 41-17 on a pair of Elhusseini free throws with 50 seconds remaining.  Edinboro would shoot 51.9 percent in the first half (14-of-27), making 7-of-12 3-pointers, while Cal came in at 26.9 percent (7-of-26).

The Vulcans would inch a little closer in the third period after Edinboro would build its lead to 25 points at 47-22 on a Barnes' layup. The third quarter would end with Cal shaving seven points off that figure at 54-36.

Despite facing a harassing full-court press by a Cal team that came in leading the PSAC by a wide margin in turnover margin, Edinboro extended the lead to as many as 30 points in the final period. Edinboro opened the period with the first seven points on a pair of layups by Barnes, plus a free throw, along with a Sharpe layup. That made the score 61-36 and eliminated any doubt of the outcome.
