Barnes Scores 42 as Fighting Scots Lose to Ninth-Ranked IUP in Double Overtime

INDIANA, Pa. – For the second time this year, the Edinboro women's basketball team rallied from a large deficit against a highly-ranked Indiana(Pa.) team, only to come up just short. After falling just short in the first meeting, 66-63, the Fighting Scots forced the contest into two overtimes before the ninth-ranked Crimson Hawks came away with 80-72 win.

Edinboro is now 14-9 overall and 12-7 in the PSAC West, falling into a toe with Cal U for third place in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots own the tiebreaker with a sweep of the two regular season meetings with the Vulcans. IUP, ranked number one in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings released earlier today, is now 23-2 overall and 18-2 in league play, good for first in the PSAC West.

In what has become the norm, Edinboro received yet another outstanding effort from Michaela Barnes, who continues to state a strong case for the top player in the PSAC West. The 5'5" senior would register the third 40-point game of her career with 42 points, coming up one point shy of her own school record set earlier this year vs. Mercyhurst.

In the process, Barnes moved past Jessica Rowe into second place in career scoring with 1,869 points. That leaves her 57 points behind all-time leading scorer Samantha Reimer. In addition, she has scored 587 points this season, good for fifth in a season. A year ago she scored 609 points, which is fourth in a season. She has had 15 games of 20-or-more points and eight games with 30-or-more.

Barnes would play all 50 minutes, making 14-of-27 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers, and going 11-of-12 from the line.  She would add 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

With IUP's stingy defense holding the Fighting Scots to an incredible 14.7 percent shooting in the first half (5-of-34), Edinboro trailed 29-20 at the half. The deficit would grow to 16 points at 43-27 midway through the third quarter.

That's when the Fighting Scots came alive. They would close the third quarter on a 12-2 run to enter the fourth quarter trailing, 45-39. Barnes would account for the first seven points, with Bridgette Shaffer making a 3-pointer and Cheniya Sharpe scoring a layup.

A Barnes layup to open the fourth quarter made it 45-41, but the Crimson Hawks increased their lead to 50-41. With Barnes and Rana Elhusseini leading the way, Edinboro would close the gap to two points at 56-54 with 37 seconds left.

Justina Mascaro's layup with 24 seconds to play gave IUP a seemingly safe 58-54 lead. Barnes hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left, and Sharpe forced a jump ball for a steal with 10 seconds left. Shaffer's layup with five seconds remaining would send the game into overtime tied at 58-58.

Edinboro would take its first lead of the game since the first quarter to start the first overtime period on a pair of free throws by Sharpe. The teams would go back and forth, with a Barnes' layup with 1:56 left giving the Scots a 64-62 lead, but layups by Lexi Griggs and Maura D'Anna gave IUP a 66-64 lead with 15 seconds to play. This time Barnes would extend the game into a second overtime with a layup with six seconds remaining to knot the game at 66-66

The Crimson Hawks finally gained control in the second overtime on the strength of back-to-back 3-pointers by Natalie Myers. After Mascaro gave IUP the lead for good at 68-66 with a layup, Myers, one of the top 3-point shooters in the country, hit two three's to give the Crimson Hawks a 74-68 lead. She had scored just two points all night prior to the two three's. The Scots would pull to within five at 77-72 on Shaffer's 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, but IUP would add a free throw and layup to end the game.

Edinboro was able to hang with the Crimson Hawks despite shooting 30.8 percent from the floor (24-of-78). IUP came in ranked second in Division II in field goal percentage defense at 32.5 percent. Edinboro made 8-of-27 3-pointers and was 16-of-20 at the line. IUP shot 45.8 percent from the floor (33-of-72), making 8-of-29 3-pointers and 6-of-10 free throws.

The Fighting Scots held a narrow 48-46 rebounding edge against a taller IUP squad as Sharpe pulled down 16 rebounds. She came in ranked second in the PSAC in rebounding. Edinboro committed 18 turnovers and IUP 19.

Elhusseini was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 13 points. The 5'3" freshman added 7 assists and 3 steals. Shaffer finished with 9 points, making a pair of 3-pointers.

Mascaro led IUP with 23 points along with 7 rebounds, while Courtney Alexander added 20 points. Griggs pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.

The Fighting Scots play the first of back-to-back home games on Saturday, February 22, hosting local rival Mercyhurst. The contest tips off at 1 p.m., and is the annual Make-A-Wish Game, including a very special reveal at halftime of the men's game.
