Edinboro Clinches PSAC Home Playoff Game with Big Fourth Quarter vs. Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team continued its mastery over Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse, while clinching a PSAC first round home playoff game in the process. It didn't come as easy as the final score might indicate, but Edinboro would hand the Lakers a 75-59 defeat to improve to 15-9 overall and 13-7. Mercyhurst was dealt a blow in its pursuit of a PSAC playoff berth while falling to 7-19 overall and 7-13 in conference play.

Edinboro has now won 17 of the last 18 games vs. the Lakers and have now won the last 16 meetings at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots are tied with Cal for third place in the PSAC West standings with two games to play. Edinboro owns the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping the season series with the Vulcans.

In the first meeting with Mercyhurst on January 29, Edinboro pulled away in the second half for a 78-61 win as Michaela Barnes and Rana Elhusseini combined for 67 points. After a slow start, Barnes would ride a big fourth quarter to her 16th 20-point effort of the season, finishing with 26 points.

But it was the play of several other players that really keyed the win. Bridgette Shaffer scored22 points on the strength of five 3-pointers, freshman Emma Elash came off the bench to match her season-high with 10 points, and Monica Brown played harassing defense while registering a career-high 5 steals.

Then there was Cheniya Sharpe, who again dominated the glass while recording her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds. As the game wore on, Edinboro gained control of the boards and would finish with a 36-25 advantage.

Mercyhurst would lead for much of the game. The Lakers made five 3-pointers and shot 60.0 percent (9-of-15) in the first quarter to jump out to a 23-15 advantage after ten minutes. Edinboro would cut into the lead slightly in the second quarter, closing to 30-25 at the half.
Mercyhurst would match its biggest lead of the game of nine points at 38-29 early in the third quarter, and still held a 42-34 lead when Edinboro started its run. After a pair of Barnes free throws, Elash hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score at 42-42 and cap an 8-0 run. The freshman came into the game with five 3-pointers all year.

The Lakers would respond with the next five points to go up 47-42, but Edinboro the third period with a 3-point play by Shaffer and a Barnes layup to enter the fourth quarter tied at 47-47.

Shaffer would give the Fighting Scots the lead for good on a 17-foot jumper, and followed that up with a 3-pointer for a 52-47 lead with 8:30 remaining. She would finish with 11 points in the period as Edinboro dominated the quarter, 28-12.

Barnes would add 15 points in the fourth quarter, all in the final four-plus minutes. When Emily Shopene hit a 3-pointer, Mercyhurst still by just five at 57-52 midway through the quarter. But Barnes would score Edinboro's final 13 points – all at the free throw line. She would hit seven free throws in a 7-0 run for the Scots that boosted a 63-55 lead to 70-55 in the span of a minute.

Edinboro would make 5-of-10 shots in the decisive fourth quarter, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, all three makes by Shaffer, and went 15-of-18 at the line. Mercyhurst was limited to 2-of-10 shooting.

She set single-game records for free throws made (19) and attempted (24) vs. East Stroudsburg last year. She also had 5 assists.
Shaffer would drain 5-of-11 3-pointers and 7-of-17 field goals overall on her way to 22 points. She added 6 rebounds. The graduate student has made 79 3-pointers this year, moving into fourth place in a season, and has 141 career 3-pointers, good for eighth all-time.

Sharpe has now pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in 13 games this season after grabbing 15 boards on Saturday. She has had double-figure rebounds in five of the last six games and is averaging 12.5 rpg. over that span. She had seven offensive boards.
