Barnes Sets Career, Single-Game Scoring Records on Senior Night as Scots Down Slippery Rock, 86-68

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team celebrated Senior Night with an impressive 86-68 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday. Edinboro has now won two games in a row and four of its last five to improve to 16-9 overall and 14-7 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock, one of three teams battling for the last berth in the Western Division, is now 8-19 and 6-15, respectively.

Prior to the game, seniors Abbey Antolic, Michaela Barnes, Bridgette Shaffer, and Cheniya Sharpe were recognized. All four seniors would play a large role in the win, but it turned into a record-setting night for Barnes.

The 5'5" guard began the night needing 32 points to break Samantha Reimer's career record of 1,926 points. Her night began with her singing a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. She would end the evening as Edinboro's all-time leading scorer with 1,940 points, setting the record with a free throw with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter.

Barnes would put an exclamation point on her final regular season performance at McComb Fieldhouse by breaking her own single-game scoring record with 45 points. That bettered her output of 43 points at Mercyhurst on January 29. The record came on a short jumper in the paint with 3:49 remaining in the game.

Barnes would make 16-of-26 field goals, including a 3-pointer, along with 12-of-13 free throws. She added 6 assists and 4 rebounds.
Sharpe, meanwhile also continued her strong play with her ninth double-double of the season and fourth straight game with 10-or-more rebounds. She finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, making 5-of-9 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws.

The night got off to a good start for the seniors as Shaffer made a 3-pointer to open the scoring. The Fighting Scots would never trail as they jumped out to a 22-10 lead after one period, with Barnes contributing 12 points.

Slippery Rock would pull to within three points in the second quarter at 24-21 with 6:28 remaining in the half. Barnes took over from there, finishing the second quarter with 13 more points to boost Edinboro's lead back up to 41-30. She would enter halftime with 25 points.

Edinboro's lead would grow to as many as 23 points in the third quarter as they scored 27 points, with the Fighting Scots leading 68-49 after three quarters. But the real drama of the quarter was when would Barnes get the seven points necessary to become the all-time leading scorer.

After Rana Elhusseini opened the period with a 3-pointer, Barnes would score the next six points to tie the record. Elhusseini drained another three, and then Barnes was fouled on a drive. When she drained the first of two free throws at the 5:31 mark of the period, she was mobbed by her teammates and cheered on by a large student cheering section.

Barnes would score 12 points in the third quarter, and the only question that remained was whether she could break her own single-game scoring record. She reached the 40-point mark for the third time this year with jumper with 6:36 remaining. A pair of free throws at 4:12 tied the record, before she scored points 44 and 45 on the jumper with 3:49 remaining.

Edinboro would shoot 46.9 percent for the game (30-of-64) while limiting SRU to 39.4 percent (28-of-71). Both teams made six 3-pointers, while Edinboro was 20-of-25 at the line compared to a 6-of-7 figure for The Rock.

As has been the case in recent weeks, Edinboro turned in a strong showing on the glass, outrebounding SRU, 45-34. The Fighting Scots committed 11 turnovers and SRU 13.

Brooke Hinderliter, who like Barnes entered the game ranked second in career scoring, finished with 25 points. Madison Johnson added 17 points and Brittany Andrews 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Edinboro will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, February 29 at Seton Hill. The Fighting Scots will then host a first round PSAC Tournament playoff game on Monday, March 2, with tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
