Fighting Scots Clinch Third Seed in Loss to Seton Hill, Host Griffins on Monday

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team picked up a win and a loss on Saturday despite playing just once. The Fighting Scots dropped a 72-68 decision at Seton Hill on Saturday, but combined with Cal's loss to Gannon, the Fighting Scots clinched the third seed in the PSAC West.
 
Edinboro is now 16-10 overall and finished 14-8 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots will now face a second straight meeting with Seton Hill, which clinched the sixth spot in the Western Division field with the Senior Day win. The Griffins are 14-14 overall and 8-14 in league play. The first round PSAC Tournament game with take place at McComb Fieldhouse on Monday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.
 
The Fighting Scots won the earlier meeting, 90-71, and had dominated the all-time series with Seton Hill, now winning 21 of the 23 meetings. On Saturday, Edinboro held a slim 33-30 lead at the half, and expanded the advantage to 41-32 early in the third quarter when Bridgette Shaffer scored on a layup.
 
The Griffins responded with seven straight points, the last five by Cheyenne Trest, to pull to within 41-39. They would take the lead for the first time since the first two minutes of the game at 49-48 with just under two minutes to play on Tiana Stewart's 3-pointer. Seton Hill would lead 52-50 after three quarters.
 
While Edinboro never trailed by more than four points in the final quarter, the Fighting Scots would reclaim the lead once, at 54-53 with 7:56 remaining on a pair of free throws by Michaela Barnes. A Trest three gave the lead back to Seton Hill at 56-54.  The Griffins would go the line repeatedly after that, making 8-of-10 free throws, with their four baskets all layups.
 
Edinboro continued to put the pressure on, closing to one point on five occasions. The last came with 51 seconds remaining at 69-68 after Shaffer drained a 3-pointer. Trest made a pair of free throws with 27 seconds to play, and after an Edinboro missed 3-pointer, Lexi Civittolo made one-of-two free throws with 13 seconds to go. Edinboro would come down and miss another three.
 
After becoming Edinboro's all-time leading scorer on Wednesday night, Barnes finished with her first double-double of the season and second of her career. She boosted her career total to 1,966 points as she scored 26 points, making 9-of-21 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws. She added a career-high 11 rebounds while dishing out 6 assists.  
 
Barnes has now scored 684 points this season, leaving her seven points shy of the season record of 691 set by Tammy Walker-Strode in 1991-92. She entered Saturday's game as the leading scorer in Division II.
 
Three other fighting Scots scored in double figures. Shaffer had 11 points and 6 rebounds, making a pair of 3-pointers. That gives her 82 on the season as she moves into third place, and 144 for her career, which ranks eighth.
 
Cheniya Sharpe once again dominated the glass, pulling down 16 rebounds to go with 10 points. She had seven offensive boards. Sharpe entered the game as the leading rebounder in the PSAC. It was her fourth straight double-double and tenth of the season. She has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in five straight games.
 
Freshman Emma Elash came off the bench to add 10 points, making 4-of-8 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers.
 
Trest would lead all scorers with 33 points, going 13-of-14 at the line. Civittolo added 16 points. Katie Nolan, meanwhile, actually outdid Sharpe on the glass, grabbing 20 boards.
 
Edinboro would shoot 39.1 percent from the floor (27-of-69), going 5-of-17 on 3-pointers, while making 9-of-13 free throws. Seton Hill finished at 39.0 percent from the floor (23-of-59), going 6-of-24 on 3-pointers, and went 20-of-27 at the line. The Griffins shot just four free throws in the first half, but 23 in the second half.
 
Seton Hill would hold a 44-40 advantage on the boards. Edinboro would turn the ball over just five times compared to 10 for the Griffins.
