Edinboro Advances to PSAC Quarterfinals with 81-62 Win over Seton Hill

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team, seeded third in the Western Division, advanced to the PSAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Monday night with an 81-62 win over sixth-seed Seton Hill at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots had four players combine for 76 of the team's 82 points while improving to 17-10 on the season. Seton Hill's season comes to an end at 14-15.

Edinboro will now move on to play at second-seed Gannon on Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. The two teams split the regular season contests, with each winning on their home court. The Lady Knights prevailed 72-53 at the Hammermill Center on January 3, but Edinboro came back for a 56-52 win at McComb on February 5.

The Fighting Scots and Seton Hill were playing for the second time in three days, after the Griffins had posted a 72-68 win on Saturday. Edinboro has dominated the all-time series, 22-2 now, and was making its 11th straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament. Seton Hill, meanwhile, was playing in the postseason for the seventh straight year.

Michaela Barnes paced the Fighting Scots with 27 points, 19 in the second half, adding six assists and 3 steals. She made 12-of-20 field goals and was 3-of-3 at the line. The leading scorer in Division II set the school record for points in a season late in the first half on a layup, breaking the record of 691 points by Tammy Walker-Strode in 1991-92. She finished the night with 711 points. Barnes also holds the school single-game scoring record (45) and is the career leader, now with 1,993 points. She is looking to become just the 14th player in PSAC history with 2,000 career points.

The 5'5" guard was presented a game ball prior to the start of the game for breaking the career scoring record, and Samantha Reimer made the presentation along with head coach Callie Wheeler. Barnes broke Reimer's record of 1,926 points.

Barnes had plenty of help on Monday night. Bridgette Shaffer also had a big second half with 15 points to finish with her fifth game of 20-or-more points. She totaled 22 points, making 9-of-15 field goals and 4-of-8 3-pointers, and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds. The graduate student now has 86 3-pointers this season, which is tied for second and two behind the season record.

Cheniya Sharpe had her 11th double-double, and fourth in a row, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds. She has had four straight double-doubles and six straight games of 10-or-more rebounds. She pulled down seven offensive boards as Edinboro totaled 16 offensive rebounds. She climbed into 17th place in career rebounds with 570, and her 280 rebounds this season ranks 15th. Sharpe came in as the PSAC's leading rebounder.

Rana Elhusseini rounded out Edinboro's quartet of double-figure scorers. The freshman point guard contributed 11 points, 5 rebounds, and a season-high 8 assists.

Not to be lost in all the scoring was the defensive job turned in by Monica Brown and Emma Elash on SHU's Cheyenne Trest. Trest burned the Scots for 33 points on Saturday, but with Brown or Elash shadowing her from the outset, she would finish with nine points.

Lexi Civittolo led the Griffins with 18 points, while Tiana Stewart came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

The lead would change hands six times in the early stages, until Michaela Barnes hit a jumper to give the Fighting Scots a 9-8 lead midway through the first quarter. That led to a string of eight straight points, five by Elhusseini, as Edinboro took a 15-8 lead. Seton Hill would close to 17-13 after one quarter.

Edinboro would build the margin to 11 points on three occasions in the second quarter, but again the Griffins refused to go away, making it 37-31 at the half. Seton Hill would make 6-of-19 3-pointers in the first half, as half of their baskets were from beyond the arc.

Seton Hill's seventh 3-pointer of the night, this one by Trest, pulled the Griffins to within 39-36 early in the third quarter. Edinboro proceeded to go on a 17-3 run to take a comfortable 56-39 lead with 3:22 left in the period.

Shaffer would open the spurt with a three, then followed with a layup. Barnes made it seven straight points with a layup, before Katie Nolan hit a 3-pointers for SHU. Edinboro would then run off the next 10 points on a Barnes jumper, a Sharpe layup, another Barnes jumper, a Shaffer jumper, and two free throws by Barnes. The third period would end with Edinboro holding a 58-45 lead.

Seton Hill would close to 11 points at 60-49 early in the fourth quarter, but Edinboro's lead would grow to 69-51 less than three minutes later with Shaffer scoring five points and Barnes four. The Griffins never got closer than 15 points after that.

Edinboro would shoot 47.1 percent for the game (32-of-68), making 6-of-21 3-pointers, along with going 11-of-13 at the line. Seton Hill was at 42.9 percent for the game (24-of-56), making 10-of-33 3-pointers. After attempting 27 free throws on Saturday, the Griffins finished 4-of-5 at the line.

With Sharpe and Shaffer leading the way, Edinboro dominated the boards, 42-27. They held a 36-20 advantage in points in the points. In addition, Edinboro had a 19-11 edge in points off turnovers, as Seton hill committed 20 and Edinboro 13.
