Crowd Roars Its Approval as Edinboro Wins Fifth Straight, 56-52 over Gannon

EDINBORO, Pa. – Michaela Barnes and Rana Elhusseini combined for 50 points to lead Edinboro to a 56-52 win over Gannon while playing in front of a large and loud crowd at McComb Fieldhouse. The victory was the fifth straight and eighth in the last nine games for the Fighting Scots, as they improved to 12-7 overall and 10-5 in the PSAC West. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Gannon, who came in winners of 12 of their last 13 contest. The Lady Knights are now 17-5 and 13-3, respectively.

The contest was a typical affair between the two local rivals. It featured six ties and five lead changes, with neither team holding more than a seven-point lead in the game.
Gannon would take a 1-0 lead as Haley Tewes made on of two free throws, but Edinboro grabbed the lead on an Elhusseini 3-pointer and would not trail again just under seven minutes remained in the game. That's when the Lady Knights hit back-to-back three's to grab a 44-41 advantage with 6:39 remaining.

The deficit would eventually grow to 47-43, Gannon's largest lead of the night, when Emily Poling hit yet another three. Barnes responded with four straight points on a layup and a mid-range jumper to knot the score at 47-47. Elhusseini's layup following a Gannon miss gave the Fighting Scots a 49-47 lead with 3:24 to play.

Back came Gannon, as Poling drained another three for a 50-49 lead with 1:20 to play. Barnes and Elhusseini took over from there. Barnes' layup after she rebounded her own miss gave the Scots the lead for good at 51-50 with 40 seconds left. Cheniya Sharpe came up with a steal and the Lady Knights were forced to foul. Barnes made one-of-two from the charity stripe, and after another Gannon turnover, Elhusseini made both free throw throws for a 54-50 lead with eight seconds left.

Gannon would make it interesting when Tewes scored on a layup with three seconds remaining. Following two Gannon timeouts, Elhusseini was fouled and converted both free throws with a second showing.

The contest got off to an extremely slow start, as defense and turnovers dominated the first quarter. Edinboro held an 8-3 lead after one period as the two teams combined to make just 3-of-23 shots and commit 13 turnovers. The scoring picked up in the second quarter, with Edinboro holding a 25-22 lead at intermission.

A layup by Cheniya Sharpe matched Edinboro's biggest lead of the night at 29-22, but the Lady knights would battle back to knot the score at 36-36 after three quarters.

For the second straight games, the backcourt tandem of Barnes and Elhusseini dominated the scoring. Barnes, who entered the game ranked second in the PSAC and third in Division II in scoring at 24.6 ppg., led all scorers with 26 points. The 5'5" senior made 9-of-17 field goals, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, and was 6-of-7 at the line. She added four rebounds.

Barnes boosted her career total to 1,750 points, leaving her 26 points shy of moving into third place in career scoring. She scored 20-or-more points for the fifth straight game and the 12th time this season.

Elhusseini chipped in with 24 points for the second straight game and has now scored 20-or-more points in three of the last four games. The 5'3" freshman made 8-of-24 field goals, including 3-of-11 3-pointers, and was 5-of-6 at the line. She also had four rebounds.

Sharpe turned in a huge effort on the glass as the Fighting Scots battled Gannon to a draw in rebounding, 34-34. She led all rebounders with 12, including six on the offensive end. She has now had 10-or-more rebounds in four of the last six games and six of the last eight contests. Sharpe came in second in the PSAC in rebounding at 9.1 rpg.

Bridgette Shaffer would add six rebounds, but the graduate student saw her streak of games with a 3-pointer come to an end. She had made at least one 3-pointer in all 18 games and 20 games dating back to last year before missing all three of her attempts on Wednesday.

Edinboro shot 35.7 percent from the floor (20-of-56), making 5-of-22 3-pointers, and was 11-of-13 at the line. Gannon came in at 40.7 percent from the floor (22-of-54), but was just 6-of-24 on 3-pointers and 2-of-4 from the line. The Lady Knights committed 19 turnovers compared to 13 for Edinboro.

Chelsea Rourke was the lone player in double figures for Gannon with 12 points. Sydney Mitchell and Poling scored nine points apiece.

Edinboro looks to build on its winning streak this Saturday, February 8, playing at Pitt-Johnstown in a 5 p.m. tipoff.
