Fighting Scots Rally From Double-Digit Deficit Before Falling at UPJ in Overtime, 78-71

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday night as Pitt-Johnstown handed the Fighting Scots a 78-71 defeat in overtime. The Fighting Scots are now 12-8 overall and 10-6 in the PSAC West, while UPJ improved to 13-10 and 8-9, respectively.

The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half at 36-23 and were behind by 11 at the half, 40-29. Edinboro shot just 20.0 percent in the first half, making 6-of-30 shots.

Edinboro began its comeback in the third quarter thanks to a 13-2 run that pulled the Scots to within 44-42 with 4:19 remaining, After making 2-of-11 3-pointers in the first half, they made three in a span of less than two minutes. Rana Elhusseini started the run with a three, and Monica Brown and Bridgette Shaffer would hit back-to-back three's.  The third quarter would end with UPJ clinging to a 51-50 lead.

Including Cheniya Sharpe's layup to end the third quarter began a run of eight straight points as Edinboro would grab a 56-50 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Shaffer opened the fourth period with a drive, and Alexis Rodenbaugh scored, followed by a Brown jumper.

Edinboro was leading 58-52 when the Mountain Cats pulled back into the lead with eight straight points, including 3-pointers by Makaylin Clapper and Ashley Norling, to go ahead 60-58 with 3:13 remaining. Elhusseini scored on a drive and Barnes hit a pair of free throws for a 62-60 lead, but Olivia Fasick tied it at 62-62 with 1:40 showing.

Barnes scored on a spinning drive through four players and was fouled with 1:20 remaining to give the lead back to the Scots at 65-62. But Alli McGrath knotted the score at 65-65 with three from the left wing with 23 seconds showing. Edinboro had a pair of 2-point attempts in the final seconds, but neither would fall.

The overtime began with an exchange of points, with Gabrielle Smith scoring on a layup and Elhusseini making a pair of free throws. Another Smith layup would give UPJ the lead for good at 69-67 with 3:40 remaining, and she added a pair of free throws to give UPJ a 71-67 lead with 3:15 left.  Shaffer's layup cut the deficit to two, but Maddie Shanahan's layup built the UPJ lead back to four.

A jumper in the lane by Elhusseini with 2:06 remaining closed the gap to 73-71, but the Fighting Scots would not score again. UPJ would make 5-of-6 free throws in the final 63 seconds for the final margin.

Edinboro matched its worst shooting game of the year at 31.3 percent (21-of-67), and made 5-of-22 3-pointers along with 24-of-27 free throws. UPJ was 25-of-57 from the floor (43.9 pct.), making 11-of-25 3-pointers, and went 17-of-24 at the line.

The Fighting Scots won the rebound battle, 46-35, as Sharpe pulled down 10 rebounds. It marked the seventh time in the last nine games she pulled down 10-or-more rebounds. UPJ committed 19 turnovers compared to 18 for Edinboro, but the Mountain Cats had a 25-16 edge in points off turnovers.

Barnes led four Fighting Scots in double figures with 19 points, making 11-of-13 free throws. She added five rebounds and six assists. The senior guard came in leading the PSAC in scoring at 24.6 ppg. She boosted her career total to 1,769 points, leaving her seven points shy of moving into third place in career scoring.

Elhusseini added 13 points, while Shaffer finished with 12 points and eight rebounds and Brown also notched 12 points. Rodenbaugh had eight rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

Smith and McGrath paced UPJ with 22 and 16 points, respectively.  Smith also had 10 rebounds.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, February 12, wrapping up a two-game road trip at Clarion. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
