Fighting Scots Win Four Bouts in 25-13 Loss at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Edinboro would come away with four wins in its Mid-American Conference dual at Lock Haven on Thursday night, but the Bald Eagles won three by bonus points compared to one for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro would suffer a 25-13 loss, dropping to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the MAC. Lock Haven improved to 7-5 and 3-2, respectively.

The match would begin at heavyweight, and Edinboro would grab a 3-0 lead behind a dominating performance from Jon Spaulding. The junior improved to 22-7 with a 9-3 decision over Trey Hartsock. Spaulding registered three takedowns.

Lock Haven would jump ahead 13-3 while winning the next three matches behind a trio of nationally-ranked wrestlers, with two by first period technical falls. Luke Werner (24-4), ranked eighth by InterMat at 125 lbs., won 16-0 at 1:13 over Lucas Rodriguez. Freshman Tye Varndell (13-11) would give 18th-ranked DJ Fehlman (21-6) a stern test at 133 lbs., but Fehlman would pull away for the 7-2 decision, Kyle Shoop (16-5), ranked 20th at 141 lbs., followed with a 16-0 technical fall at 1:45 over Richie Gomez.

Tyler Vath would pull the Scots to within 13-6 with a workmanlike 6-1 decision over Brock Port (11-11) at 149 lbs. The redshirt senior evened his record at 11-11 on the strength of takedowns in the second and third periods.

Any comeback hopes the Fighting Scots had were dashed as Lock Haven claimed wins in the next three bouts. Alex Klucker (13-7) edged Peter Pappas (14-12) at 157 lbs., and Austin Bell (17-11) was a 6-0 winner over Derek Ciavarro (10-12) at 165 lbs.  

The top match of the night was expected to be at 174 lbs., where 16th-ranked Jacob Oliver, 19-4 with nine straight wins, was scheduled to meet Jared Siegrist (20-10). However, Anthony Chambers would replace Oliver, and Siegrist opened with two quick takedowns before pinning Chambers in 33 seconds.

That left the match out of reach at 25-5, but Edinboro would close out the night with wins at 184 and 197 lbs.  Redshirt freshman Cody Mulligan improved to 15-10 with a technical fall over Ray Bernot, winning 18-1 at 7:00. Mulligan would record three takedowns along with a reversal, and has eight nearfall points.

Dylan Reynolds wrapped up the night with 8-4 decision over Parker McClellan at 197 lbs. The redshirt senior recorded takedowns in each period to improve to 16-9.

Edinboro has a quick turnaround before taking to the mat again. The Fighting Scots host Davidson on Saturday, February 8 at 1 p.m. in a first-time meeting between the two teams.
