Edinboro Opens Two-Game Road Trip with Loss at Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting Pitt-Johnstown team on Saturday night at the UPJ Sports Center, suffering a 98-73 defeat. The loss drops the Fighting Scots to 5-15 overall and 2-14 in the PSAC West. UPJ, meanwhile, is now 19-5 and 13-4 in league play.

Pitt-Johnstown came into the game leading the PSAC in field goal percentage at almost 52 percent, and the Mountain Cats shot 57.6 percent from the floor (38-of-66). They made 9-of-20 3-pointers and went 13-of-16 at the line. Edinboro came in at 39.5 percent (30-of-76), going 8-of-32 on 3-pointers, and 5-of-9 at the line.

UPJ won the rebound battle, 42-36, although Edinboro hustled its way to 15 offensive rebounds. Both teams committed 15 turnovers.
The Fighting Scots had three players score in double digits, led by Trey Staunch with 18 points. Staunch muscled his way inside for 18 points, making 7-of-13 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws, and also pulled down seven rebounds. In his second game back after missing five games with an injury, Anthony Coleman dropped in 16 points while adding five rebounds. Jaryn Simpson added 15 points, making three 3-pointers, while pulling down five rebounds.  

Five Mountain Cats scored in double figures. Josh Wise got off to a fast start and scored a game-high 23 points, adding six rebounds. Joe Batt came off the bench to contribute 20 points and six assists, while Fred Mulbah had 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists. John Paul Kromka flirted with a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. Drew Magestro finished with 11 points.

The Fighting Scots played a strong first half, at one point building a 10-point lead at 35-25. Edinboro ran off 11 straight points, with Steven Freeman scoring on a layup and 3-pointers.  UPJ would score the next nine points, and the Mountain Cats would eventually lead 52-49 at the half.

Simpson's 3-pointer early in the second knotted the score at 54-54, but UPJ would score the next 11 points in less than three minutes to build a 65-54 lead with 15:30 remaining. Edinboro would pull within seven points on two occasions after that, the last at 73-66 with 10:25 left. After building the lead back to 12 points, the Mountain Cats would hold Edinboro scoreless the final five minutes, scoring the final 13 points of the game.

Edinboro will look to snap its 11-game losing streak with the second of back-to-back road games, playing at Clarion on Wednesday, February 12. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
