Fighting Scots Ride Tech Falls from Pappas, Oliver for 28-18 Win over Davidson

Peter Pappas won by technical fall at 157 lbs.
EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team picked up technical falls by Peter Pappas and Jacob Oliver to snap a three-match losing streak with a 28-18 win over Davidson on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro improved to 10-8 overall while the Wildcats are now 3-9.

The Fighting Scots would win seven of the ten bouts in the first-ever dual with Davidson, but with the Wildcats' three wins coming by fall, the Fighting Scots were forced to use a less-than-100 percent Oliver at 174 lbs.  The redshirt sophomore sat out Thursday's match at Lock Haven due to an injury, but he came through with a 17-1 technical fall over Steve Newell to give Edinboro aa 19-12 lead.

While improving to 20-4 on the season, Oliver would jump out to a 9-0 lead after one period behind a takedown and two tilts that resulted in six points. He would add four more back points, and after an escape and his second takedown, tilted Newell again for two points to bring an end to the bout.

Pappas (15-12) picked up a 21-6 technical fall at 6:14 at 157 lbs. over Hunter Costa.  He held a 4-1 lead after one period on the strength of a pair of takedowns, then blew the match open over the next two periods. He registered three takedowns in the second period and led 11-4. He would finish with eight takedowns in all, with three more in the third period along with two nearfall points.

The match got underway with Davidson recording falls in two of the first three matches to grab a 12-3 lead. Edinboro led in both bouts when the pins occurred. Lucas Rodriguez (14-11) held a 4-0 lead over Cian Fisscher in the second period when Fischer was able to record the defensive pin.

Freshman Tye Varndell came up with another strong showing at 133 lbs., winning a 3-2 decision over Kyle Gorant (10-8). Varndell had the lone takedown in the first period for a 2-1 lead, and a Gorant escape was the lone scoring in the second period. Varndell would register the winning escape 25 seconds into the third period to improve to 14-11.

Richie Gomez looked to be on his way to a win at 141 lbs., holding a 4-1 lead after one period and up 7-4 late in the second against David Loniewski. Loniewski would reverse Gomez in the final seconds and came up with the fall at 4:57.

Trailing 12-3, Edinboro would recover to win the next three bouts. Tyler Vath won an 8-5 decision over Dalton Blankenship at 149 lbs. to improve to 12-11. He used two takedowns and two escapes to build a 6-2 lead after two periods. A Blankenship reversal and a stalling point narrowed the match to 6-5, but Vath added an escape in the final second and had 2:55 in riding time.

The technical falls by Pappas and Oliver sandwiched a 16-10 decision by Derek Ciavarro over Noah Satterfield at 165 lbs. Ciavarro rode a huge first period to the win. The transfer from Virginia Tech had six takedowns in the first period to grab a 12-6 lead. He added a seventh in the third period. Ciavarro is now 11-12.

Oliver's win gave Edinboro a 19-12 lead and actually clinched the match with the Fighting Scots set to receive a forfeit at 197 lbs.  But the most anticipated match of the day still took place at 184 lbs., with Edinboro's Cody Mulligan (15-11) from Saegertown High School squaring off against Gavin Henry from Union City High School. The two both came up through the Great Lakes Elementary Wrestling program run by former Edinboro assistant coach Gary Astorino. Henry, a true freshman, would catch Mulligan near the edge of the mat for a takedown, add four back points, and recorded Davidson's third pin of the day at 1:06.

Even with the fall, Edinboro had an insurmountable 25-18 lead after Dylan Reynolds' forfeit win at 197 lbs.  Jon Spaulding capped the win with a 7-1 decision over Mitchell Trigg at heavyweight. Following a scoreless first period, Spaulding used a reversal, a penalty point, and a stalling point for a 4-0 lead after two periods. He recorded the lone takedown in the final 20 seconds. Spaulding is now 23-7.

Edinboro has two more duals remaining, both at home. The Fighting scots host Michigan on Friday, February 21, then host Clarion for Senior Day on Sunday, February 23.
