EDINBORO, PA - The Fighting Scots (7-3) were unfortunate to not come away with a result against Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon. Double overtime was required to find a winner with Mercyhurst scoring in the last five minutes of the second overtime period to win the game 2-1.
The Lakers signalled their intent from the first whistle, putting pressure straight away on the Edinboro backline. Mercyhurst scored with just one minute gone in the game, Emily Mijares scoring her fifth goal of the season.
Edinboro shook off the early setback and returned the pressure toward the Lakers goal. The game saw Edinboro have a host of chances,
Brittnie Spithaler,
Reece Enochs,
Lexi Boyk and
Morgan Wissner all coming close to getting the equalizer.
It would take till the 85th minute for the Fighting Scots to find the much needed leveller.
Mary Sinan was able to convert a fantastic free-kick from 25-yards out into the top right corner to send the game to overtime.
The Fighting Scots looked the more likely to find the winner with
Reece Enochs having two breakaway chances with the shots going just wide. In the 105th minute of the game Mercyhurst were awarded a free-kick, Amber
Thomas converted with some quick thinking, shooting before the wall was set to score the winning goal. Edinboro outshot Mercyhurst with 18 shots to nine.
Anna Voelker and Maddie Elbrow recorded four saves each in the game. The Fighting Scots can take many positives from the game and were unlucky not to be on the winning side of the result.
Edinboro return to action on Wednesday Oct. 13 Kickoff 6 p.m. against Indiana (Pa.) at Sox Harrison Stadium.
