Edinboro, Pa. - The Edinboro University volleyball team fell short and were defeated in three sets (17-25, 25-27, 16-25) by Clarion University, in a PSAC quarterfinal on Tuesday night at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro, Pa. With the loss the Fighting Scots have been eliminated from the PSAC tournament. The Golden Eagles will move on and await the winner of East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg.
On the offensive attack for Edinboro, junior Bella Burrelli finished with a team-high 10 kills on a .128 clip
Junior Abby Monn followed her with nine kills and hit at a .097 clip
Senior Alicia Eldredge finished with a team-high 27 assists for Edinboro and continued to distribute to the attack
On defense Monn also led the Scots with a team-high 17 digs, freshman Carly Pry followed with 10 digs of her own
Freshman Michaella Cloonan paced the Scots with two total blocks
In the opening set of the match, Clarion set the tone and won the first set 25-17. Early in the set Edinboro put together a string of points to put them up 9-6. Midway through the set, Clarion would respond with their own run when they scored 11 of the next 13 points, putting the Golden Eagles up 17-11. During the run Clarion recorded eight kills, as they hit a .318 clip in the first set compared to Edinboro .116 clip.
In the second set Edinboro went back and forth with Clarion, but ultimately the Golden Eagles won the set 27-25. The second set consisted of 16 ties and five lead changes. Midway through the set, a string of three points consisting of back-to-back kills by Burrelli and a Clarion error put the Scots up 14-13. Later in the set both a kill and a block by sophomore Natalie Pallone, along with a few Clarion errors tied up the set at 21-21. Clarion's advantage on the attack would uplift them in the second set, the Golden Eagles recorded 16 kills compared to Edinboro's 13. The match was tied at 25-25 when Clarion would score back-to-back kills to conclude the set.
In the third and final set Clarion had gained control of the momentum and won the final set 25-16 to conclude the match. Clarion's defense came alive in the third set, recording eight block assists and one solo block. This impacted the Edinboro attack, finishing with a -.086 hitting percentage for the set. Late in the set a kill by Pallone put Edinboro down 15-18. Clarion finished out the set by going on a 7-1 run, recording four kills and two total blocks. That was enough for Clarion to clinch the match and defeat Edinboro 3-0.
