Women’s Volleyball Defeats Clarion in First Round of NCAA Atlantic Tournament

Wheeling, WV - The Edinboro University volleyball team was victorious in four sets (19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18) over Clarion University, in the Atlantic Regional Tournament match up on Thursday afternoon at Alma Grace McDonough Center in Wheeling, WV. With the win the Fighting Scots improved to (22-6) overall and (13-3) in the PSAC West. The Golden Eagles fall to (22-10) overall and (11-5) in conference play.   

On the offensive attack for Edinboro, junior Bella Burrelli finished with 14 kills. She hit at an .049. 

Freshman Abby Monn contributed 10 kills and hit at .320. Junior Erica Sharp also added 9 kills for Edinboro's offensive attack while hitting at an impressive .818.  

Senior Alicia Eldredge continued to create for Edinboro's balanced offense, Eldredge finished another match with 40 assists.  

Freshman Carly Pry, freshman Abigale Soboleski, and sophomore Emelia Rowell all recorded a singular ace on the afternoon. 

On the defensive side for Edinboro; senior Sally Sterkel led the Scots with six blocks, followed by Eldridge with four and Sharp with two.

In the digs department Burrelli finished with 16, while Pry added 12, and Eldridge contributed eight of her own. 

In the opening set of the match Edinboro was in a battle with Clarion, the Golden Eagles would take the first set 25-19. The Scots were in fighting distance early in the match with multiple lead changes. The Golden Eagles began to slowly pull away mid match. The Scots had a late push that had stopped the Golden Eagles at 19. Edinboro began to show a bit of energy but it was not enough, as the Golden Eagles carried out the first set 25-19.  

The second set of the match was quite the opposite of the first. Edinboro controlled the momentum and won the second set 25-19. The Scots started the set off with a quick 3-0 lead. They controlled the pace the entire set with no lead changes or ties. Edinboro's attack remained efficient, they hit at .385 and posted 13 kills. Edinboro ended the set on a 3-1 run, with kills by Burrelli and Sterkel. 

In the third set, Edinboro would be victorious 25-20. There was a multiple shifts in momentum of this set. The Golden Eagles came out with a 2-0 start until the Fighting Scots energy picked up to regain the lead. There 4 ties and 3 lead changes. Clarion's attack tried making a late push but was unsuccessful. The Scots final points came from a block by Sterkel and Eldridge; to the final point/kill by Sterkel. 

In the fourth and final set, Edinboro was able to continue from the last set with a quick 3-0 run. The Scots would go on to win the set 25-18. Edinboro would begin to pull away and hold the Golden Eagles at 7 points. The Scots extended their lead to as much as 10 points with a 19-9 lead. Later in the set Clarion would begin a late surge to cut the lead to 7 but was unable to break that. Edinboro would finish out the game with a kill by Sharp, assisted by Eldridge. 

Edinboro will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 3, at Alma Grace McDonough Center when they play the winner of Wheeling and Fayetteville State at 7:30 p.m.
