ELMIRA, N.Y. – Sophie DePalma (Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) is within striking distance of 100 career points as a collegiate lacrosse player, thanks in part to a career high nine-point day Monday against Elmira College.
While she came up short of the century mark today, it would make Wednesday's game against Elmira even sweeter to surpass the milestone on her home turf.
Kaitlyn Binotto (Canonsburg, Pa./Seton-La Salle) got the start in goal for the Fighting Scots, who competed in their second game of the season after facing off with Slippery Rock on March 23.
DePalma began scoring at less than three minutes into the contest on a free shot that found twine. Roughly a minute later, she notched career point number 92, capitalizing on a failed clear attempt by picking up a ground ball and scoring.
Angelina Anderson (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) got in on the act next, assisted by Maddie Mulcahy (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) to give the Scots a 3-1 advantage.
The next goal game eight minutes and 11 seconds into the first half as Mulcahy got on the board with an unassisted goal.
DePalma scored twice more in the half before Anderson assisted a Christina Clutter (Amity, Pa./Trinity) score that put Edinboro on top 7-6 with 58 seconds left in the half.
DePalma had another goal, assisted by Mulcahy to give the Scots an 8-6 lead heading into the halftime locker room.
Elmira scored the first three goals of the second half before Edinboro responded off the stick of Anderson, assisted by Mulcahy.
Then the Elmira lead grew to 15-9 and Edinboro staged a rally.
Goals by DePalma, Caitlyn Watson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Mulcahy (assisted by Watson), Anderson (assisted by DePalma), Mulcahy and Anderson knotted the game at 15 with 12:50 left in regulation.
Mulcahy scored once more with 43 seconds left, assisted by DePalma for career point number 99.
Edinboro dropped the final 18-16 but is eager for the rematch Wednesday at Sox Harrison Stadium.
