EDINBORO, PA - The Fighting Scots (5-0) saw their unbeaten run continue against Clarion (2-2) with a 3-1 victory at Fox Harrison Stadium. Edinboro came out for the second half firing on all cylinders seeing another game where they convincingly outshot their opponents with 17 shots to Clarion's four.
The first half saw a stalemate of the two teams with neither able to dominate the other. Early proceedings saw Edinboro awarded two corners with Maggie Fragapane coming closest with a header that was blocked by the Clarion defense.
Annie Weimer was alert to any breakaways with good defensive coverage and strong tackling. Maggie Hays was introduced midway through the first period helping gain some needed possession.
A Clarion counterattack saw Mary Sinan called into action to clear a driven cross away from the Edinboro goal.
The first half ended with a close moment for either side. First coming from Edinboro where a through ball was just out of reach from Morgan Wissner who couldn't poke it past the onrushing goalkeeper. Clarion then had a chance at the other end when the ball skipped up at Anna Voelker nearly wrong footing Edinboro's standout goalkeeper was able to react quickly to recover the ball.
The second half saw the Fighting Scots pour on the pressure early seeing two quick corners result in good chances. First with Brittnie Spithaler having a shot from just outside the box go wide and then Annie Weimer saw a header go just wide.
The deadlock was broken on the 57-minute mark when a penalty was awarded after some crafty work by Reece Enochs as she was brought down. The resulting penalty was expertly taken by Brittnie Spithaler for her second of the season.
Before Clarion could regroup Mary Sinan fired the Fighting Scots into a two-goal lead with a goal of the season nominee. Edinboro's No.31 blasted a dipping shot over Clarion's goalkeeper from 30-yards.
Edinboro were reminded that the game wasn't over when Clarion caught Edinboro napping when they switched the field to an open Abby Sullivan (#23) who slotted home to make it 2-1.
The Fighting Scots regained control with a flurry of dangerous attacks, closest coming when a curling cross from Mary Sinan was met by Morgan Wissner but the header flashed past the post.
The win was sealed when another contender for goal of the season was scored. This time great team play saw Reece Enochs drive a ball across the box to Morgan Wissner who played a smart dummy through her legs to the onrushing Maggie Hays who poked the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards.
This saw an important victory for the Fighting Scots as they look to recover this week before their next game scheduled for Saturday, Sep. 25 Kickoff 6:30 PM.
