WSOC | RECAP | Edinboro women’s first loss of the season comes in overtime thriller

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, PA - The Fighting Scots battled out a thrilling game but were the victims of overtime this time round, falling to a 3-2 loss at Gannon University on Saturday evening. In a game that saw Edinboro hold the upper hand twice, they unfortunately fell to an early goal in overtime to taste defeat for the first time this season.
 
The game started exactly how the Fighting Scots would have wanted, when Brittnie Spithaler fired from range on the two-minute mark from 25-yards out, sending a dipping left footed shot over the Gannon goalkeeper.
 
The game was a feisty encounter with both teams looking to compete in the air for headers and on the ground with some good strong tackles. Edinboro were unable to find a second goal before the Golden Knights were level in the 27th minute when a free kick rebounded in the box and was slotted home by Gabby Boden.
 
Edinboro looked a rejuvenated team for the start of the second period where they were on the front foot again. Brittnie Spithaler again in the action, hitting the post from a left footed volley. The Fighting Scots were ahead just moments later after a well worked freekick by Clare Crossley found Lexi Boyk waiting in the six-yard box to put Edinboro 2-1 up.
 
The Golden Knights woken up by the second goal began to put pressure the other way. Before Edinboro could regroup to try and control the possession, Gannon were level two minutes later with a looping shot from Taylor Lewis finding the net. Both teams fought till the end of regulation but neither was able to fashion clear chances with a lot of play occurring in the middle of the field. The game seeing 13 fouls to Edinboro and 12 to Gannon.
 
Into overtime the game went, with both teams having experienced it this season. Edinboro won against Cal (Pa.) in double overtime and Gannon tying twice 0-0 in double overtime. Edinboro were to be unfortunate this time round, when a corner kick was taken short by Gannon allowing Kayla Bevacqua to dribble into the 18-yard box and fire a left footed shot into the roof of the net.
 
Edinboro experienced defeat for the first time this season, the focus now must be to get back to winning ways with a strong reaction. The Fighting Scots will look to do this when they travel to Slippery Rock, Wednesday, Sep 29. Kickoff at 4 p.m.
