Edinboro, Pa. - With its fifth straight win and fifth straight sweep, the Edinboro University volleyball team recorded a 3-0 victory (25-22, 30-28, 25-22) over Clarion University on Tuesday night at Tippin Gymnasium. With tonight's win, the Fighting Scots improved to (9-1) overall and (2-0) in PSAC West competition. The Golden Eagles fall to (9-5) overall and (1-1) in the PSAC West.
Bella Burrelli led the way on the offensive attack, she had 14 kills in the game and now currently has 100 kills on the season.
Abby Monn had an efficient 11 kills with a hitting percentage of .303,
Natalie Pallone who has come alive in the past few games added nine kills as well. Edinboro's productive offense continued to run through the Scot of the Week
Alicia Eldredge, she was responsible for 34 of the team's total 39 assists. Eldredge remains consistent for Edinboro, she averages 10.72 assists per set on the season
The Fighting Scots defense remained relentless, three Edinboro players recorded at least ten digs.
Carly Pry, who has 85 digs on the season, led the way against Clarion with an impressive 18 digs. Monn contributed 14, and Burrelli added 12 of her own. The win over Clarion was also a team effort up front on the net as Edinboro had success putting the Golden Eagle attack on halt. The Fighting Scots combined for 14 block assists. Eldredge and
Sally Sterkel both recorded four block assists,
Michaella Cloonan contributed three, and Pallone added two of her own.
Edinboro earned a tough win in the opening set while achieving a 25-22 victory. Throughout the set there were multiple runs made by each team. Edinboro came out of the gates early and rallied four straight points off Monn's service. Later in the set, Edinboro was trailing 18-21. They then went on another run; the run was jump started by two straight kills from Burrelli. Edinboro went from being down three, to being up 23-21. The last point was finished off with a kill by Cloonan which was assisted by Eldredge, Edinboro claimed the first set 25-22.
The second set was the most entertaining set of the game, both teams battled back and forth until Edinboro reached 30-28 victory. There were not many runs made early in the set by either team. The set consisted of 19 ties and seven lead changes. Clarion was down three when they made a four-point run late in the set. Clarion's run included three kills and put them in the lead 23-24. Eventually, Edinboro gained control and scored the last three points, which concluded the set 30-28.
The final set was once again another battle with Clarion. The beginning of the set continued to see the two teams swap leads. The third set accounted for nine ties and three lead changes. Later in the set, Edinboro was tied with clarion 17-17 and went on a four-point run. The run was serviced by Abigale Soboleski and gave Edinboro the momentum needed to finish off the set. Burrelli recorded her 100th kill of the season late in the final set to put Edinboro up 22-19. Edinboro's final point came from a kill by Monn which concluded the game with final score of 25-22.
Edinboro will be back in action on Oct. 1 when they host Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 6 p.m.
