Edinboro, Pa – The Edinboro men's basketball team dropped an 89-84 final at home to PSAC West rival California University of Pa. during the team's first game of 2022.
With 1:39 left to play, Cyrie Coates hit a jumper to cut the Vulcan's lead to just two points. It just wasn't enough for the Scots, as the visitors continued to hit shots and sustain a lead until the final buzzer.
Edinboro put together an impressive first half and came out the gates on fire from deep, connecting on seven three-pointers. The Scots would gain their biggest lead of the half after a four-point play from Jaryn Simpson to put Edinboro ahead 40-32. Edinboro ended the first half on a 5-0 run and went into the lockeroom with a 45-40 lead.
In the second half, the two PSAC West schools would continue to trade baskets. The biggest lead from either team came at the 8:49 mark when Coates assisted Terrence Moore on a slam dunk to put the Scots ahead 71-63.
California would respond as they acquired their second lead of the half with just 2:39 to play. The Vulcans relied on the play of Brent Pegram who scored 8 points in the final three minutes of play.
Deontae Robertson finished with a team-high 23 points, along with five rebounds and three steals.
Simpson put in 20 points of his own, along with six assists and four rebounds.
Coates followed them with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Edinboro will travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a match up with another PSAC West opponent on Monday at 3 p.m.
