Women’s Basketball Battles Back for Comeback Victory Over Cal

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team outscored visiting Cal 23-8 in the fourth quarter to earn a 62-53 victory Saturday afternoon in McComb Fieldhouse.

Cal led 48-39 after Shauna Harrison hit a 3-poionter 21 seconds into the fourth quarter. Rana Elhusseini started the comeback with a bucket at the 9:13 mark. Bella Burrelli converted back-to-back old-school 3-point plays to trim the lead to 48-47with 7:09 to play.

After a Brionna Allen free throw, Haley Sims tied the game with layup at with 5:58 left. Allen gave the Vulcans the lead back, but nine straight points from the Fighting Scots keyed by a Gillian triple mad the score 57-51 Edinboro with 56 seconds to play.

Harrison scored a layup with 27 seconds left to trim the lead to five, but Elhusseini closed out the game going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to set the final.

The Scots held a 31-30 lead at the half, but Cal came out and pushed the lead to 45-35 with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. Macie Jarrett and Burrelli netted buckets to trim the lead to 45-39 heading to the fourth.

Cal jumped out early opening the game with an 11-5 spurt capped by an Allen jumper with 5:42 left in the opening frame. The Scots trimmed the lead to 13-12 with a 7-2 run of their own with Sims scoring all seven points. Dejah Terrell scored five points to close out the half give the Vulcans an 18-13 lead after one.

The Vulcan lead grew to 23-14 after a Lauren Bennett bucket at the 6:58 mark of the second. Elhusseini scored 12 straight points for Edinboro leading a 12-3 run tying the score at 26. Emma Elash gave the Fighting Scots their first lead of the game with a layup at the 1:42 mark of the second quarter. Cal scored four straight to go up 30-28 before Sims answered with a trey with 6 seconds left in the half to give Edinboro a 31-20 edge at the break.

Elhusseini led the offense for the Scots with 24 points to go with seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Sims finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Burrelli finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Allen led the way for the Vulcans with 17 points. The Scots held the PSAC's third leading scorer Terrell to just 11 points, eight below her average.

Edinboro is back in action on Monday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Mountain Cats.
