Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team erased an 12-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime and come out with a 91-88 victory in double overtime over visiting Mercyhurst in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
Trailing by 11, 63-52, with 8:48 to play in the game, the Fighting Scots went on an 8-2 spurt keyed by four points from
Lauren Mullen to trim the lead to 65-60 with 6:48 remaining. The Laker lead grew back to eight, 68-60 with 5:52 to play on a pair of Lauren Klare free throws.
Edinboro went on an 18-7 run capped by a pair of
Rana Elhusseini free throws to take a 78-75 lead with 23 seconds left in regulation. Julia Buchman hit a triple with 11 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 78 and force overtime.
Each team scored five in the first overtime to send the game to a second extra frame tied 83-83.
Monica Brown opened the second overtime with 3-pointer giving the Scots the lead. Emily Shopene hit two free throws to trim the lead to 86-85, but Mullen pushed the lead back to three with a layup with just 27 seconds on the clock. The Scots fouled to prevent a 3-point shot and Shopene split a pair to make the score 88-86. Elhusseini and Mullen would combine to go 3-of-4 at the line in the final seconds to salt away the win for the Scots.
Edinboro came out of the gates hot taking a 12-4 lead at the 4:37 mark of the first. The Lakers closed out the first quarter with an 11-6 spurt to trim the lead to 18-15 after one.
Mercyhurst carried their momentum into the second quarter building their largest lead of the half, 37-25, on a Grace Centrulla layup with 2:55 remaining in the period. The Scots battled back closing the halftime deficit to 39-32 part of a 7-2 spurt to end the half.
The Lakers scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half to extend their lead to 47-34 just 1:26 into the fourth quarter. Nine straight points for Edinboro capped by a Haley Sims triple at 6:31 pulled the Scots within four, 47-43. Mercyhurst finished the quarter on a 12-5 run to take an 11-point edge into the final quarter.
Elhusseini and Sims each tallied 17 points and eight rebounds to pace the Scot offense. Mullen added 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Ashten Boggs also reached double figures with 13 points.
Jayde Boyd led the Laker offense with 20 points while Shopene finished with 15.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Slippery Rock to McComb Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
