Elkins, W.Va. – The Edinboro women's basketball team overcame a slow start to rally past host Davis & Elkins 67-55 Wednesday night running their record to 3-0 on the young season.
The Senators jumped out of the gate hot building a 13-2 advantage in the first 4:22 of the game. Edinboro finished the first quarter on a 14-7 run keyed by five points from
Rana Elhusseini to cut the deficit to 20-16.
Edinboro pulled even, 22-22, on a
Hayley Sims 3-pointer with 6:34 left in the second quarter. Davis & Elkins scored the next four points to take the lead back 26-22 at the 4:31 mark. The Scot ratcheted up the pressure closing the quarter on a 12-1 run and holding the Senators without a made field goal in the second quarter. Edinboro took a 34-27 lead into the half.
In the third,
Morgan Gentile scored nine of her 11 points in the first five minutes of the quarter as part of an 11-4 spurt that pushed the Fighting Scot advantage to 45-31. Davis & Elkins closed the quarter with a 6-2 spurt to cut the lead to 47-38 going to the final frame.
The Senators used a 9-5 run to cut into the Fighting Scot lead trimming it to 52-46 with 6:05 to play. Edinboro scored eight of the game's next 10 points to push the advantage back out to 60-48 with 4:08 to play. The Scots closed out the game strong going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final four minutes to ice the victory.
Elhusseini recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. She also added five steals and three assists. Sims chipped in 12 points as well as seven boards. Gentile added three rebounds to her 11 points.
Taylor Smith and Ellie Wilkerson each scored 11 points to lead the Senators. Wilkerson also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Edinboro forced 32 Davis & Elkins turnovers which were converted into 25 points. The Scots also overcame a 7-of-31 night from beyond the arc with a 22-of-28 performance at the free throw line.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Bluefield State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
