Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team outscored Clarion 26-8 in the second quarter to pull away and earn a 73-54 victory Wednesday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
Clarion scored the first two points of the second quarter to tie the game 17-17. The Fighting Scots went on a 17-0 run spanning the next 4:30 of the quarter led by eight points from
Ashten Boggs to take a 34-17 lead. Cory Santoro broke the run with a triple, but Edinboro closed out the half with a 9-3 spurt to close the half up 43-23.
The Golden Eagles pushed back in the third trimming the lead to nine, 50-41 with 1:28 to play in the quarter. Baskets by
Bella Burrelli and
Lauren Mullen extended the Scot lead to 54-51 at the end of the third.
Clarion scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to trim the lead to 54-45, but
Monica Brown and
Rana Elhusseini each connected from beyond the arc to pus the lead back out to 60-47. Emily Hegedus and Haley Sims traded triples before Clarion scored four straight to get back within nine, 63-54 with 4:47 to play.
Sims took over in the final four minutes scoring eight of Edinboro's last 10 points as the Scot defense held the Golden Eagles off the board in the final 4:47 to set the final and earn the victory.
The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter capped by a Brown 3-pointer at the 7:00 mark. Clarion answered with an 10-2 spurt of their own to trim the advantage to 12-10. The teams traded baskets with Edinboro holding a 17-15 lead after the first.
Sims led all scorers with 23 points to go with six rebounds. Boggs also reached double-figures with 13 points. Burrelli and Elhusseini each tallied nine points. Burrelli recorded a team-high eight rebounds.
Santoro paced the Golden Eagles with 18 points while Sierra Bermudz added 12.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cal U. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
