South Euclid, Oh. – Two first-half goals were enough to seal victory for the Falcons of Notre Dame (Ohio) against Edinboro on Saturday afternoon. The game saw Edinboro have their own chances throughout the game but were unable to capitalize on them.
Edinboro began the game with real intent toward goal with
Reece Enochs and
Teaghan Watkins both having shots in the first 10 minutes. Watkins was making her first appearance as a starter as a freshman for Edinboro, registering three shots in total in the game.
After early Edinboro control, the Falcons fought back and scored the opening goal in the 29th minute. A cross-shot by Emma Buda was unfortunately deflected into the Edinboro goal making it 1-0.
The second goal came in the 36th minute when Hannah Smith broke free of the Edinboro defense and picked out Madison Marino who calmly finished.
The Fighting Scots had sustained periods of pressure in the second half, totaling seven shots at goal with five finding the target. Freshman
Emily Vogel coming closest after good footwork just inside the 18-yard box allowed her to get off a left-footed strike which the Falcons goalkeeper was equal to.
Kaylee Lauriel was in goal for Edinboro and had four saves to her name when called into action in what was her third official appearance for the Scots.
"There are positives to take from the game despite the result," said head coach
Gary Kagiavas. "The motivation and intensity of the players showed in how hard they played. We were able to put pressure on them, but unfortunately, we lacked the final product in the key areas of the field. As a collective, we need to be better at working the ball into the key areas and finishing our chances."
Edinboro now switches its attention to PSAC West action on Wednesday, Aug 31. at 1 p.m. where they face Mercyhurst University in Erie
Head coach
Gary Kagiavas provided some insight into what he expects next time out. "They were picked number one in the west and so we have to be better in scoring as defensively we will hold our own. We know we have work to do, hopefully, we rebound on Wednesday as I'm sure we have a hearty group of players and they will show that in our next game."
