Volleyball Prevails in five sets over Slippery Rock

Edinboro, Pa.-- The Edinboro volleyball team earned a tough win on Friday night against Slippery Rock University in five sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12). With the win, the Scots improved to (11-2) overall. 

In the opening set Slippery Rock got things going with a 4-2 lead. The Scots responded with five straight point ending with a kill from Natalie Pallone. Later in the set three-straight points from the Rock to gave them a 17-16 lead. Edinboro finished the first set by scoring the final five points. The run was fueled by two blocks from Sally Sterkel and a kill from Erica Sharp

The second set shifted into the Rock's favor. After trailing 6-9 early, Slippery Rock ran up nine consecutive points to obtain a 15-9 lead. Edinboro countered with five-straight points of their own, including a block and kill from Sterkel. The Scot's run trimmed Slippery Rock's lead to just one point. Late in the set the score was even at 22-22. The Rock proceeded to score three straight and would win the set off a block from Mary Berger and Callie Chevalier. Slippery Rock won set two 25-22. 

In the third set the Scots bounced back and held the Rock to their fewest points all night. Edinboro quickly grabbed an early 13-6 lead after a kill from Bella Burrelli. The Scots' ten kills in the set guided them to a convincing set win. A Slippery Rock attack error retired the set at 25-19 in favor of Edinboro.  

The Rock was on the brink of elimination, when they began to catch fire in the fourth set. Slippery Rock produced 16 kills at (.245) clip and forced a fifth set. Midway through the set, a kill from Pallone knotted things up at 12-12. Slippery Rock countered with a run consisting of five kills and one block, to go up 19-12 on the Scots. A kill from Slippery Rock's Erica Selfridge retired the fourth set at 25-21 in favor of the Rock. 

Edinboro saved their best performance for the fifth and final set. The Scots produced ten kills on an efficient (.385) hitting percentage. Early in the set Slippery Rock maintained a small lead. Suddenly, back-to-back kills from Burrelli boosted Edinboro ahead 8-6. Later on back-to-back kills from Pallone put the Scots ahead 13-9. The Rock didn't quit just yet, as they put together three-straight points and only trailed 12-13. The last two points of the match went to Edinboro, including the match point kill from Jessie Michel. Edinboro won the fifth set 15-12.  

  • Alicia Eldredge dished off 42 assists and went for 21 digs on defense. 

  • Natalie Pallone finished with a team-high 13 kills on (.136) clip and added in two blocks. 

  • Bella Burrelli added in 12 kills on (.113) clip as well as 15 digs on defense. 

  • Erica Sharp provided eight kills on (.233) clip and seven blocks on defense. 

Edinboro will be back in action tomorrow when they visit IUP on the road at 6 p.m.
