Grischow game-winner clinches victory against Clarion University

Edinboro, Pa. – Edinboro welcomed their first win of the 2022 season with a 1-0 win against Clarion on Wednesday evening. Avery Grischow was the eventual game-winner with her first collegiate goal securing the victory in a tightly contested game. Edinboro held out ensuring their second shutout of the season to help the team over the line.

The Fighting Scots controlled much of the first half of play having five attempts at goal. Clare Crossley had two dangerous attempts for Edinboro with one finding the target. The first came from a long-range effort while the second saw some smart play in the box from Haylee Wilson allow the ball to fall to Crossley who had her attempt saved well by Alex Velez low to the right corner of the goal.

In a physical match, Edinboro found success in the midfield battle. Maggie Hays, Clare Crossley, and Annie Weimer helped their defense win the ball back on numerous occasions and looked to spring attacks when possible with some good link-up play throughout the 90-minutes.

Clarion had eight shots in the game with their best chances coming from long-range. Kylee Cross looked most threatening for the Golden Eagles having six shots in total. Two shots from deep free-kicks tested Kaylee Lauriel who was equal to them. Lauriel secured her second shutout of the season with three saves in the game, as well as a stubborn Edinboro defensive effort keeping Clarion at long range.

The deadlock was broken in the 71st minute when Edinboro took advantage of a long throw-in opportunity. The ball found its way to Avery Grischow who took one touch to settle the ball and finish well into the bottom right corner. This was Grischow's first collegiate goal as well as game-winner for Edinboro. The assist for the goal goes to Sarah Tomko who launched the long throw-in into the penalty area.

Edinboro saw out the final stages of the game well limiting opportunities and possession to the opposition. The game ended with Edinboro having 10 attempts in the game with five on target, with Clarion having eight and three on target.

The victory sees Edinboro lifted ahead of Clarion and Slippery Rock in the PSAC West standings with Edinboro welcoming Slippery Rock to Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday afternoon where kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
