Volleyball Falls to Gannon at Home

Edinboro, Pa.-- The Edinboro volleyball team was defeated by Gannon University (22-25, 13-25, 27-25, 20-25) on Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse. With the loss, Edinboro falls to (12-4) overall and (2-2) in conference play.  

In four sets played, Gannon recorded 16 more kills and seven less errors than the Fighting Scots. Edinboro finished with a (.174) hitting percentage compared to the Golden Knight's (.281) clip. 

In the opening set Edinboro jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead after kills from Natalie Pallone and Alicia Eldredge, as well as blocks from Sally Sterkel and Pallone. Gannon responded later in the set with seven consecutive points to gain the lead over Edinboro 13-7. The Scots countered with an 8-1 run that included three straight kills from Bella Burrelli and Sterkel. The run put Edinboro back up 15-14. An attack error from Gannon cut the lead to 23-22 in favor of the Golden Knights. Back-to-back kills from Gannon would retire the first set 25-22. 

The second set was Edinboro's least productive set on the afternoon. The Fighting Scots were held to a match-low 13 points on a (.089) hitting percentage. Gannon opened things up with seven straight points to go ahead 12-3 early. Another run extended the lead to 20-6 after a Gannon kill. The Scots did string together four points late in the set caused by Burrelli and Jessie Michel. Eventually, Gannon retired the second set with a kill and service ace in consecutive points. Gannon won the second set 25-13. 

Edinboro responded in the third set on the verge of elimination and put together their best performance of the afternoon. Edinboro recorded a match-high 18 kills on a (.277) clip. Early in the set three consective kills from Michel, Sharp and Burrelli tied the score at 8-8. The two PSAC West teams continued to swap leads throughout the set. Back-to-back kills from Sharp put the Scots on top 19-16. Suddenly Edinboro found themselves on the brink of elimination as they trailed 24-25. Instead, back-to-back solo blocks from Pallone and Sharp put Edinboro ahead 26-25. The Scots won the third set on an ace from Allison Swiatkowski, with a score of 27-25. 

In the fourth set Edinboro was determined to force a fifth and final set, but came up short. Gannon took the early lead after a kill put them up 8-3. Edinboro countered with four straight points to regain the lead at 10-9. The teams continued to trade points until late in the set. A string of four points extended Gannon's lead to 23-17. The Scots once again countered with three straight points including an ace from Abigale Soboleski, which cut Gannon's lead to just 23-20. Back-to-back kills from the Golden Knights would conclude the set and the match. Gannon won the match in four sets. 

  • Bella Burrelli finished with a team-high 15 kills on (.239) and added 11 digs. 

  • Alicia Eldredge finished 38 assists and 25 digs which were both team highs. 

  • Natalie Pallone added 13 kills on (.238) and contributed five digs. 

Edinboro will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Seton Hill University at 7 p.m.
