California, Pa.- The Fighting Scots took on the Vulcans of Cal U in wet and windy conditions on Wednesday evening. Cal U scored two first-half goals that were enough to see the game out with the final score 2-0 to the hosts.
Edinboro started the game well in the opening stages with the attacking line of Reece Enochs, Lexi Boyk, and Megan Malits looking to get in behind the Vulcans backline. Enochs was able to test the Vulcans goalkeeper early with a shot on target with just a minute on the clock.
Cal U grabbed a foothold in the game after the early Boro pressure and opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Lindsie Galbreath was the scorer for Cal U, who found herself on the end of a rebound from an initial save and finished into the right side of the goal.
The remainder of the half saw back-and-forth action with the ball fizzing on the wet surface, making it hard for any team to really control possession. Lex Boyk had two attempts that came closest to finding the equalizer but to no avail.
Cal U was awarded a penalty after Hadley Sleith was adjudged to have fouled the Vulcans attacker on a recovery tackle. Sleith had gotten a touch on the ball before the contact but the referee's decision stood. Kaylee Elwood slotted the penalty kick to make it 2-0 at halftime.
Edinboro looked to push forward in the second half to find a way back into the game. Clare Crossley had a fine game in the midfield once again, Crossley came closest to pulling a goal back with a flying header from 12-yards out which was tipped over the bar well.
With Edinboro committing players forward chances still fell for Cal U. Kaylee Lauriel did well to keep them out with seven saves in total with four of them coming in the second half.
A late free-kick saw Edinboro's last chance of the game. Haydn Paxton had a low-driven effort saved well by Emily Ouimet who had four saves in the game.
Edinboro again had good moments in the game with chances but was unable to make them count when needed. They travel to UPJ on Saturday, Oct. 1 looking to begin the second half of the season with a win. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
