Edinboro, Pa. - Women's soccer welcomed Gannon University to Sox Harrison on Wednesday evening. In a game that saw its fair amount of chances for both sides in a physically ferocious game, the Golden Knights took victory 3-0 at the final whistle.
Wednesday evening saw a game where the scoreline won't reflect the effort and performance that the Edinboro women provided. In total both teams had nine attempts at goal with Gannon needing four saves to Edinboro's three.
The first half of action saw both sides match each other physically in tackles and aerial duels. Madison Felton was a cornerstone in the Edinboro defense during the first half not allowing the Gannon forwards any time on the ball.
The 45-minutes saw little threat to both goalkeepers, Edinboro had two attempts in the half but were unable to find the target. Gannon registered four shots with one requiring a save.
The second half began with Gannon earning a corner in the 48th minute. The first corner of the game for either team proved to be pivotal as Leah Bermudez headed home a deep corner to put Gannon 1-0 ahead.
The Fighting Scots reacted well, less than a minute later earning a free-kick with Gannon's goalkeeper being adjudged to have handled the ball outside the penalty area. Haydn Paxton's attempt was just over the bar from the resulting free-kick.
Bermudez was awarded the second yellow card of the game after a strong foul on Maggie Hays. Hays brushed the tackle off, and a couple of minutes later in the 67th had a terrific effort with the outside of her fight foot tipped just over the bar, for what looked certain to be the equalizer.
The save by Kennedy Solymosi in the Gannon goal proved vital as Gannon doubled their lead five minutes later. Jamie Seneca fired an effort from outside the box which found its way into the bottom left corner.
A third goal was added three minutes later as Edinboro pushed players forward. Paige Taylor scored after her initial effort was saved by Kaylee Lauriel with the rebound finding its way into the goal.
A defeat for the Fighting Scots but a performance with many positives throughout that will be needed for the games to come. Clare Crossley a notable mention leading through example during the game with a fighting performance supported by each Boro player till the final whistle.
Edinboro will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Seton Hill University (Pa.), with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
