Women’s Basketball Tops Clarion

Clarion, Pa. -- The Edinboro women's basketball team used matching 22 points performances from Rana Elhusseini and Hayley Sims to defeat host Clarion 67-57 Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gymnasium.  

In the third quarter, Clarion cut the Edinboro lead to 36-32with 6:59 on the clock. The Scots responded with 20-4 run over the next 5 minutes to extend the lead to 56-36 with 1:36 to play in the quarter. The Golden Eagles scored the next six points to trim the lead to 56-42, but Maura Suman hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Scots a 58-42 edge going to the fourth. 

Elhusseini scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter for the Scots, but Clarion went on a 12-1 spurt to trim the Edinboro advantage to 61-54 with 2:36 to play. Edinboro responded with an 8-1 run of their own capped by a pair of Elhusseini free throws to put the game away. 

Clarion jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the first. Edinboro answered with a 7-2 spurt to take an 8-6 lead after a Sims 3-pointer at the 5:29 mark. The Golden Eagles retook the lead using an 11-4 run to take a 17-12 advantage. Sims hit a layup with 15 seconds left in the first to trim the deficit to 17-14. 

Elhusseini hit a triple to start the second part of a 7-0 run for the Scots to take a 21-17 lead. Ava Haddad hit a layup to tie the game at the 6:09 mark. Macie Jarret hit a 3-pointer for the Scots and Elhusseini converted an and-one to put the Scots up 27-21. Clarion scored a layup to cut it to 27-23, before a pair of Sims free throws and an Elhusseini three made 32-23. The Golden Eagles finished the second on a 5-1 spurt to make the Scots halftime lead 33-28. 

Elhusseini added nine rebounds, four assists and four steals to her 22 points. Sims also scored 22 to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.  

Jada Smith led the Golden Eagles with 13 points and nine rebounds. Haddad also scored 13 while grabbing eight boards. 

Edinboro is back in action on Monday when they host IUP at 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
