Women’s Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Top UPJ

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team outscored visiting UPJ 47-28 in the second half on their way to a 76-55 victory over the Mountain Cats Wednesday night in PSAC West play.
 
Edinboro carried a 29-27 lead into the break and the teams traded baskets to open the third with Peyton Alazaus cutting the Scot lead back to 35-33 with a jumper at the 6:16 mark. After shooting just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, Edinboro hit four 3-pointers as part of a 14-0 run that pushed the lead to 49-33 with 2:49 remaining in the third. UPJ closed the quarter with an 8-4 spurt to make it 53-41 after three.
 
The Mountain Cats would get as close as 11, 59-48, after a Alazaus free throw, but Edinboro responded with a 15-4 run aided by triples from Maura Suman, Gillian Fisher and Hayley Sims to extend the lead to 74-52 and put the game out of reach.
 
In the first quarter, UPJ built an early 7-4 lead, before an Ashten Boggs layup and Fisher 3-pointer put Edinboro ahead 9-7. After Ashley Norling tied the game with a layup, the Scots went on a 7-2 spurt capped by a Suman trey to take a 16-11 lead. The Mountain Cats would close the first with seven straight points to take an 18-16 advantage into the second quarter.
 
UPJ extended it's lead with a layup to open the second, but four straight points from Rana Elhusseini and a Bella Burrelli layup put Edinboro back ahead 22-20. The see-saw battle went on for the rest of the quarter with Edinboro taking a slim 29-27 advantage into the locker room.
 
Elhusseini was the leading scorer for the Scots with 25 points to go along with eight assists, four rebounds and four steals. Burrelli added a season-high 18 points and a team-leading six rebounds. Sims chipped in 11 points, three rebounds and three helpers.
 
Alazaus led the Mountain Cats with 19 points. Norlilng added 15 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Erie to take on Gannon at 1 p.m.
