Women’s Basketball Falls at Gannon

Erie, Pa. -- The Edinboro women's basketball team had four players score in double figures, but the Scots couldn't overcome a tough shooting day as the came out on the wrong end of an 80-63 decision to host Gannon Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action. 

The game started with the teams trading buckets. Bella Burrelli tied the game 6-6 with a layup at the 7:52 mark of the first quarter. Gannon scored the next seven points to go up 13-6. Edinboro sandwiched a pair of Golden Knight free throws with baskets from Rana Elhusseini and Gillian Fisher to trim the lead to 15-10. Gannon finished the quarter on a 9-5 spurt to take a 24-15 advantage into the second half. 

In the second, the Golden Knight lead grew to 35-17 on a layup by Madison Demski at the 4:56 mark of the quarter. The Scots scored nine straight led by five points from Maura Suman to pull withing nine, 35-26, with 2:09 until halftime. The Golden Knights answered with the last four points of the quarter to take a 39-26 lead into the break. 

Ashten Boggs scored the first points of the third quarter with a 3-point bucket to trim the lead to 39-29. Gannon went on an 18-8 run to extend their lead to 57-37 with 1:45 left in the third. A 6-2 spurt by Edinboro cut the deficit to 59-43 at the end of the third. 

In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Gannon pushed the lead back to 20, 72-52, on an Ali Benim layup. The Scots pushed back once more scoring eight straight on a jumper by Hayley Sims and 3-pointers from Morgan Gentile and Lauren Mullen, but that was as close as the Scots would get. 

The Scots forced 26 Gannon turnovers but turned the ball over 21 times themselves. Edinboro finished 26-of-73 from the field and 6-of-27 from beyond the arc.  

Suman led Edinboro in scoring with 12 points. Elhusseini added 11 points, six steals, three assists and three rebounds. Sims also notched 11 points as well as four helpers. Burrelli netted 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.  

Bri Claxton led the Golden Knights with 16 points. Demski added 15 points while Delaney Dogan notched nine points and 10 rebounds.  

The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst inside McComb Fieldhouse. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
