Women’s Basketball Rallies in Final Minute to Beat Mercyhurst

Edinboro, Pa. – Morgan Gentile drove lane and finished a driving layup with 31 seconds left to lift the Edinboro women's basketball team to a 61-60 victory over visiting Mercyhurst Wednesday night in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.

Mercyhurst took a 60-57 lead on a Danielle Grim layup with 58 seconds to play. After a timeout advanced the basketball into the front court, Rana Elhusseini hit a step back jumper at the elbow to cut the lead to 60-59 with 45 seconds on the clock. The Scots fouled three times to set up the bonus, before Macie Jarrett poked the ball away from Jayde Boyd and Gentile raced to the loose ball and scored the layup. On the games' final possession, the Edinboro defense forced a travel with less than a second on the clock to earn the victory.

Mercyhurst led by five, 52-47, at the 6:06 mark of the fourth. The Scots went on a 6-0 spurt with two points each from Elhusseini, Gentile and Hayley Sims to take a 53-52 advantage. The teams traded the baskets to a 57-57 tie. The Lakers scored five straight to build their 60-57 advantage.

Edinboro took a seven point advantage into the half, but Grace Centrulla hit a 3-pointer to open the third trimming the lead to 30-26. Elhusseini hit a pair of free throws before Mercyhurst went on a 20-8 run to close out the third and take a 46-40 lead into the fourth.

The Scots scored the first four points of the game, but after a Boyd jumper cut the lead to 4-2 neither team would lead by more than one as Edinboro took a 12-11 lead to the second quarter.

In the second, Edinboro went on a 12-4 spurt capped by a Sims pull-up jumper at 4:34 to take a 24-15 lead. Mercyhurst would trim the lead to 26-22 with a 7-2 run of their own after a layup by Grim at the 2:03 mark. Jarrett and Sims would each score in the paint sandwiching a Boyd free throw to put the Scots up 30-23 at the break.

Gentile led the Scots in scoring with 15 points while grabbing four boards and three steals. Sims chipped in 14 points and five rebounds. Elhusseini added 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Centrulla notched 18 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Boyd also tallied 18 points to go with five boards and two steals. Grim chipped in 12 points.
