Women’s Basketball Tops Visiting Cal

Edinboro, Pa. – Hayley Sims and Rana Elhusseini each tallied 18 points as the Edinboro women's basketball team topped visiting Cal 83-77 Saturday afternoon in a key PSAC West matchup at McComb Fieldhouse.

With the game tied 43-43, Bella Burrelli hit a layup to put the Scots up 45-43. After a stop, Sims connected on a 3-pointer. The Scots forced a turnover and the Vulcans Rajah Fink committed a personal foul and then was assessed a technical. Elhusseini hit both free throws to extend the lead to 50-43.

The lead hovered at seven until back-to-back buckets by Ciara Loyd and Talia Gilliard trimmed the lead to 54-51 with 1:02 left in the third. Ashten Boggs finished an old-school 3-point play at the 39 second mark to give the Scots a 57-51 lead after three.

Boggs scored the first five Edinboro points all from the free throw line sandwiching a Halle Herrington triple making it 62-54 Scots with 9:02 to play. After a Loyd layup, Edinboro went on a 7-0 run to push the advantage to 69-56 at the 6:39 mark. The Vulcans would get as close as seven on several occasions, but wouldn't get any closer until a pair of Gilliard free throws set the final with 12 seconds on the clock.

Cal jumped on Edinboro early building a 14-2 lead after an Allycia Harris layup at the 4:53 mark of the first. The Scots responded finishing the quarter on a 20-1 run keyed by eight points from Sims taking and giving the Scots a 22-15 advantage after the first.

The Scots grew their lead to nine at the 6:30 mark of the second, 29-20, after an Elhusseini trey. The Vulcans went on a 12-2 spurt of their own to retake the lead 32-31 on a Gilliard layup at the 3:21 mark of the second. The teams traded the lead over the final two minutes with Macie Jarrett giving the Scots a slight edge, 37-35, two free throws in the final minute of the quarter a lead that Edinboro would take into the locker room.

In addition to her 18 points, Elhusseini added seven rebounds and two rebounds. Sims notched six boards, one assists, one block and one steal to go with her 18 points. Boggs also finished in double figures with 11 points. Burrelli led the Scots with eight rebounds.
