Wheeling, W.Va. – The Edinboro women's basketball team dropped a 74-61 decision to host Wheeling University Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at the Alma McDonough Center.
The Scots came out and scored the first three points of the game all coming from
Gillian Fisher. The Cardinals answered with 15 straight points to take a 15-3 lead. Edinboro answered with eight in a row.
Hayley Sims and Fisher each tallied four points in the run to trim the lead to 15-11. Wheeling closed the first on a 6-2 spurt to take a 21-13 lead after the first quarter.
Maura Suman scored the first two points of the second quarter to trim the Cardinal advantage to 21-15. Wheeling extended their lead to 35-19 with a 14-4 run capped by a Briarley Rogers 3-pointer with 4:58 left in the second. The Scots came back with seven straight points on a Sims triple and four points from
Ava Haddad. Rogers closed the half with a trey to make the halftime score 38-26 Wheeling.
The Scots would get as close as 11 twice in the third, but couldn't close gap to single digits the rest of the way.
Sims and Fisher led the Scots with 15 points each. Fisher pulled down seven rebounds and recorded three steals. Sims grabbed four boards and a notched a pair of blocks.
Hope Garrity tallied nine points going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Haddad tallied eight points and six boards.
Shamia Strayhorn led the Wheeling offense with 20 points to go with seven boards. Rodgers tallied 16 points while Rachel Wilson recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a 6 p.m. matchup with the Hilltoppers.
