Kirby Hits Game-Winner in Overtime Against Charleston

Edinboro, Pa. – Allyson Kirby hit a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds on the clock in overtime to lift the Edinboro women's basketball team to a 95-94 victory over the University of Charleston Thursday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
Kiara Cruz drew a foul and gave the Golden Eagles the lead back 94-92. Gentile took the inbound drove to the elbow and dropped the ball back to Kirby who nailed the 3-pointer. She then knocked away the final pass from the Golden Eagles to secure the win.
 
Charleston led 90-86 with 51 seconds on the clock in overtime after a Clarrissa Francis layup. Morgan Gentile hit a pair of free throws with 45 seconds on the clock to make it 90-88. Francis split a pair of and Kirby connected on a pair from the line cutting the lead to 91-90.
 
Taylor Austin drew a foul and extended the lead to 92-90 after going 1-of-2 from the line. Gentile tied the game with 15 seconds to play on a pair of free throws.
 
The Scots held a 62-60 lead going to the fourth, but the Golden Eagles opened the fourth with a 15-2 run to take a 75-64 lead with 4:14 to play in the quarter. The Scots trimmed the lead to 77-71 with two Gentile free throws with 1:48 to play. Taylor split a pair of free throws to extend the lead 78-71 with 1:26 to play. Ava Haddad made a layup before Hope Garrity and Hayley Sims connected on triples to give the Scots a 79-78 lead. Nia Vanzant gave Charleston the lead back with a layup at the 19 second mark and Gentile put the Scots back ahead 81-80 with eight seconds to play. Edinboro appeared to get a stop to end the quarter, but Sims was called for a foul and Vanzant split two free throws to send the game to overtime.
 
The Scots held a 48-41 lead at the break, but Charleston opened the third with a 6-2 spurt to trim the lead to 50-47. Gentile pushed the Scot lead to 58-53 at the 3:19 mark of the third. The Golden Eagles scored four straight to trim the lead to 58-57, but Sims and Gentile each scored two to extend the lead to 62-57, but Haley Moore hit a trey to cut the lead to 62-60 at the end of the quarter.
 
Charleston opened the game with a 10-6 spurt capped by a Moore triple at the 6:29 mark of the first. Edinboro answered with a 13-2 run keyed by eight points from Sims to build a 19-12 with 4:12 to play in the first. The Golden Eagles would trim the lead to 19-14, but Edinboro finished the first on another 11-4 spurt to take a 30-18 advantage into the second.
 
The Edinboro offense hit a speed bump in the second as the Golden Eagles used a 14-2 run over the first five minutes of the second to tie the game at 32. Sims got the Scot offense back on track hitting 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to spark a 14-3 run pushing the Edinboro lead to 46-35 with 45 seconds on the clock. Charleston closed the half with a 6-2 spurt to cut the halftime deficit to 48-41.
 
Gentile scored a career-high 36 points to go with six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Sims added 24 points, six boards and a pair of blocks. Kirby scored five of her seven points in overtime including the game-winner.
 
Taylor led six Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points. Paris Stokes added 14 while Francis, Vanzant and Kiara Cruz each scored 13.
 
The Scots return to action on Monday when they host Millersville at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
