Hayley Sims took over the game late scoring 10 of Edinboro's final 12 points as the Fighting Scots scored a 77-66 victory over Millersville in PSAC crossover action Monday afternoon.
Brenna Ortwein cut the Edinboro lead to 65-63 with a bucket at the 3:38 mark of the fourth. Sims scored the eight of the next 10 with the Scots going on a 10-0 run to push the advantage to 75-63 with 16 seconds to play. Sophie Elstone hit a triple with 10 seconds left, but Sims connected on a pair of free throws to set the final.
Edinboro held a 55-54 lead heading to the fourth. Elstone scored the first bucket of the quarter to give the Marauders a 56-55 advantage with 8:51 on the clock. Sims answered with a jumper and a 3-pointer to put Edinboro back up 60-56 at the 7:31 mark of the fourth. Elstone trimmed the lead to two, 60-58, with a bucket before
Ashten Boggs scored an and-one to put the Scots up 63-58. Millersville used a 5-2 spurt to trim the advantage to 65-63 at the 3:38 mark.
The Marauders held a 49-42 advantage with 3:53 to play in the third after an Ortwien bucket. Sims made a jumper to cut the lead to 49-44.
Ava Haddad hit a free throw and missed the second, but Gentile pulled down the offensive rebound and scored the put back to cut the deficit to 49-47 with 2:44 remaining in the third. Sims and Madison Grubb traded free throws and Boggs tied the game with a basket at the 1:29 mark. Haddad gave Edinboro the lead back, 53-52, with an old-school 3-point play with 47 seconds on the clock in the third.
Edinboro got out of the gate fast jumping to a 12-5 lead to open the game keyed by six points from Gentile. Millersville answered with 9-4 spurt of their own to trim the lead to 16-14 with 1:46 left in the first.
Gillian Fisher hit a trey at the 1:35 mark to push the advantage to 19-14. Grubb hit a jumper with 36 seconds left in the first to make it 19-16 Scots after one.
La'Shyra Williams scored the first bucket of the second quarter to cut the lead to 19-18. Edinboro answered with five straight points to extend the lead to 24-18 on a Gentile layup and
Allyson Kirby 3-pointer. Millersville used a 10-4 run to knot the game 28-28 with 2:43 left in the second. The Scots answered with a 6-3 spurt to take a 34-31 lead, but Makiah Shaw scored a layup with 4 seconds on the clock to cut the halftime deficit to 34-33.
Sims tallied 22 points to go with three rebounds and a block. Fisher stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, nine boards, three steals and two blocks. Gentile tallied 14 points, four rebounds and five helpers. Boggs finished the night with nine points.
Elstone led the Marauder offense with 15 points. Grubb chipped in 13 points and six rebounds while Ortwein added 12.
The Scots are back in action on Tuesday when they host Shepherd at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
